Exam Details

The Oklahoma HVACR Contractor Limited examination tests contractor-level knowledge of the installation, maintenance, repair, fabrication, alteration, and extension of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems, including ductwork and related equipment within the Limited classification.

The current technical exam has 80 scored questions and a 210-minute testing period. Candidates must earn at least 70%.

Electrical Knowledge and Controls contains 15 questions. Subjects include general electrical theory, motors, DC circuits, AC circuits, and controls. Candidates should understand how electrical components interact with HVAC/R equipment and how controls affect equipment operation and troubleshooting.

Natural Gas contains 12 questions. Preparation includes piping valves, connectors, accessories, hangers and supports, sizing, materials, and testing.

Air Distribution Systems contains 15 questions. Topics include duct definitions, sizing and design, duct assembly and installation, hangers and supports, duct materials and shapes, insulation, fire and smoke control, hoods and exhaust systems, testing and balancing, ventilation requirements, plans, and symbols.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems is the largest category with 20 questions. Candidates should study refrigeration theory, refrigerants, equipment sizing and design, equipment and components, piping, equipment installation, system operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Safety contains three questions covering subjects such as PPE, safety training, adequate ventilation, first aid, hazardous materials, fall protection, lockout/tagout, ladders, and scaffolds.

The separate Mechanical Business and Law examination contains 50 scored questions. Open Book Test

The Oklahoma HVACR Contractor Limited technical examination is an open-book test. The Mechanical Business and Law examination is also open book.

The current technical exam reference list includes the ACCA Ductulator, International Mechanical Code 2018 with Oklahoma revisions, International Fuel Gas Code 2018 with Oklahoma revisions, Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Manual J, Mathematics for Plumbers and Pipefitters, and 29 CFR Part 1926 OSHA.

Code questions are based on the specific code editions identified for the examination. The 2018 International Mechanical Code and 2018 International Fuel Gas Code should therefore be used for applicable code questions.

Current PSI rules allow later editions of approved non-code references. The 22nd Edition of Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning included with this package is a later edition of the listed non-code reference.

Approved examination references may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed before testing. Permanent tabs are permitted. Temporary removable tabs such as Post-it notes are not permitted.

The books supplied with this Ultimate package are highlighted and tabbed. Candidates should use the books throughout preparation so they become familiar with the tabs, chapters, indexes, tables, diagrams, and code provisions before test day.

Written notes are not permitted in approved exam references before or during the examination, and additional loose papers may not be brought in with approved references. A silent, non-printing, non-programmable calculator meeting PSI requirements may be used.

Licensing Steps

1. Gain qualifying mechanical experience. Build verifiable HVAC/R experience through work that satisfies Oklahoma mechanical licensing requirements.

State Requirements

The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board regulates mechanical licensing, including the HVAC/R Limited Contractor classification.

An HVAC/R Limited license covers qualifying cooling products, systems, and equipment, including process piping, with a cooling capacity of no more than 25 tons.

The classification also covers heating equipment and associated process piping with a heat input of no more than 500,000 Btu/h per appliance. Sheet metal, natural gas piping, and refrigeration are included within the authorized HVAC/R Limited scope.

Mechanical work exceeding the Limited capacity thresholds requires the appropriate Unlimited classification.

Oklahoma requires Mechanical Contractors to be a permanent employee, owner, partner, or officer of the mechanical firm for which they serve as the licensed contractor.

For active status, an Oklahoma Mechanical Contractor must satisfy the Construction Industries Board’s bond and insurance requirements. Active mechanical contractors must provide evidence of at least $50,000 in commercial general liability insurance. The individual license holder must be identified on the insurance certificate, with the Construction Industries Board listed as certificate holder.

Mechanical contractors must also maintain the applicable contractor bond and continuing education requirements while holding active licensing status.
