Alaska does not use one universal contractor exam. This all-licenses guide covers General, General with Residential Endorsement, Specialty, Mechanical and Handyman registrations plus Electrical Administrator categories CNTL, IC, RW, OC, UCW and UL and Mechanical Administrator categories HCPP, CNTL, RHVC, RPHH, UCIP, UHVCS and UR. The Residential Contractor Endorsement has a PSI exam, while electrical and mechanical contractor paths require the appropriate administrator credential. Verify your classification with Alaska Construction Contractors before buying books or scheduling any exam.
Alaska all licenses contractor exam prep starts by identifying the contractor registration, endorsement, administrator category or trade credential that matches the work you plan to perform. Alaska does not use one universal general contractor exam, so each license family must be matched to its own application and testing path.
Short answer: General, Residential, Specialty, Electrical, Mechanical and Handyman contractors do not all follow the same exam path. This page also covers all six current Electrical Administrator categories and all seven current Mechanical Administrator categories so applicants can choose the exact license and exam-prep track.
This page combines Alaska contractor registrations, the PSI Residential Contractor Endorsement exam, Electrical Administrator categories, Mechanical Administrator categories, application sequencing, bond rules and reference-navigation strategy into one statewide all licenses contractor exam prep guide.
Match your work scope to the exact registration, endorsement or administrator category before choosing books, courses or test prep.
| Contractor Path | Typical Scope | Exam / Credential Focus |
|---|---|---|
| General Contractor without Residential Endorsement | Broad multi-trade commercial work and other general contracting within Alaska law | Registration path; no single universal general contractor exam |
| General Contractor with Residential Endorsement | Qualifying privately owned one-to-four-unit residential construction plus general contracting authority | Residential Endorsement PSI exam + qualifying cold-climate education |
| Specialty Contractor | Approved specialty work generally requiring no more than three trades | Trade-specific registration; professional credential may also apply |
| Electrical Contractor | Electrical or communications specialty contracting | Specialty registration + Electrical Administrator category: CNTL, IC, RW, OC, UCW or UL |
| Mechanical Contractor | Plumbing, heating, HVAC, sheet metal, refrigeration and related mechanical disciplines | Mechanical registration + Mechanical Administrator category: HCPP, CNTL, RHVC, RPHH, UCIP, UHVCS or UR |
| Handyman Contractor | Qualifying projects at or below the current aggregate contract limit | Registration path; confirm scope, bond and project limit before contracting |
The contractor registration is not the same as a business license, Residential Contractor Endorsement or trade administrator license. Verify every layer required for your exact scope.
The strongest licensing and exam claims were checked against Alaska DCCED, current contractor statutes and regulations, current applications and PSI Residential Endorsement information.
| Verified Point | Authority Count | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple Alaska contractor registration classes | 3+ official sources | Classification comes before exam prep |
| Residential Endorsement required for qualifying 1-4 unit work | 4+ sources | The endorsement is separate from the business registration |
| Specialty Contractor generally limited to no more than 3 trades | 3+ official sources | Broader scope generally points to General or Residential registration |
| Electrical Contractor requires Electrical Administrator | Official Alaska source | Current categories: CNTL, IC, RW, OC, UCW and UL |
| Mechanical Contractor requires Mechanical Administrator | Official Alaska source | Current categories: HCPP, CNTL, RHVC, RPHH, UCIP, UHVCS and UR |
| Residential Endorsement exam is PSI-administered | 4+ sources | Use the current PSI bulletin for test-day rules and references |
Primary authority controls. When a prep page conflicts with Alaska DCCED, AS 08.18, 12 AAC 21 or the current PSI bulletin, use the current official source.
Use this statewide checklist to determine whether your path is registration-only, Residential Endorsement testing, or a contractor registration tied to an administrator license.
Do not assume every Alaska contractor needs the same exam. A broad contractor prep page should guide applicants into the correct registration and then into the exact test or administrator credential required by that path.
Residential path: prepare for the PSI Residential Contractor Endorsement exam and cold-climate education.
Electrical path: pair specialty contractor registration with the appropriate Electrical Administrator license.
Mechanical path: pair mechanical contractor registration with the appropriate Mechanical Administrator license.
The fastest Alaska contractor exam prep starts with classification. Do not order an exam book package until you know which registration, endorsement or administrator credential governs the work.
Simplified study illustration. Use current Alaska statutes, applications and exam bulletins for final requirements.
Train the licensing decision in the same sequence you train an open-book exam: identify the work, identify the controlling credential, locate the official requirement and then select the correct prep material.
| Decision | What to Verify | Common Mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Classification | General, residential, specialty, mechanical or handyman scope | Buying exam prep before matching the work to the license |
| Residential work | Whether one-to-four-unit work triggers the Residential Endorsement | Assuming a general registration alone covers all residential work |
| Electrical work | Electrical specialty + appropriate Electrical Administrator assignment | Confusing contractor registration with the administrator license |
| Mechanical work | Mechanical registration + appropriate Mechanical Administrator scope | Assuming one administrator category covers every mechanical discipline |
| Exam references | Current testing bulletin, code edition and book rules | Using a book list from a different Alaska credential |
| Application sequence | Professional license, entity, bond/insurance and business license steps | Treating the exam as the entire licensing process |
Classification first. Alaska contractor exam prep is most efficient when every course, reference book and practice exam is tied to the exact registration or administrator credential you actually need.
Seven steps take you from the correct Alaska contractor classification to active registration and exam-ready preparation.
List the trades, project types, residential scope and whether your business will supervise multiple subcontractors.
Match the scope to General, General with Residential Endorsement, Specialty, Mechanical or Handyman registration.
Determine whether your path requires the Residential Contractor Endorsement, Electrical Administrator or Mechanical Administrator.
Use the exact current bulletin, code edition and approved references for the required endorsement or administrator exam.
Take the applicable PSI Residential Endorsement test or administrator examination and complete any required education.
File the current Alaska application and satisfy bond, insurance, entity, assignment and professional licensing requirements.
Obtain the Alaska business license and keep registrations, endorsements, administrators, renewals and continuing requirements current.
The Residential Contractor Endorsement is the primary Alaska construction-contractor exam with a published 100-question PSI outline. Use these topic weights only for that endorsement exam—not for electrical or mechanical administrator exams.
| Residential Exam Topic | Questions | Study Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Sitework, Footings and Foundations | 12 | Orientation, foundations, slabs and crawl spaces |
| Carpentry - General and Residential Code | 12 | Framing, life safety and residential code |
| Advanced Cold-Climate Thermal and Moisture | 12 | Insulation, air control, moisture control and envelope performance |
| Concrete and Concrete Reinforcement | 10 | Concrete placement, finishing and reinforcement |
| Masonry | 8 | Masonry, fireplaces, veneers and installation |
| American Wood Council Framing Fundamentals | 8 | Lumber, joists, panels and mechanical connections |
| Seismic and Wind Loading Fundamentals | 6 | Load paths, diaphragms, shear walls and structural panels |
| Thermal and Moisture Protection - General | 6 | Roofing and moisture-protection fundamentals |
| OSHA Safety | 6 | Federal construction safety requirements |
| Equipment and Tools | 5 | Construction equipment, tools and safe application |
| Plan Reading / Cold-Climate Framing / General Code | 4 each | Plans, walls, roofs, life safety and code |
| Alaska Regulations for Residential Endorsement | 3 | Alaska contractor and endorsement rules |
These weights belong to the Residential Contractor Endorsement exam. Electrical Administrator and Mechanical Administrator candidates should use the separate current bulletin and reference list for their exact administrator category.
Your book list depends on the registration and exam path. Start with State licensing materials, then add the exact exam references for the endorsement or administrator credential you need.
| Reference | Primary Use | Who Needs It |
|---|---|---|
| Alaska Construction Contractor Statutes and Regulations | AS 08.18, 12 AAC 21, classifications, endorsement rules and contractor compliance | All Alaska contractor applicants |
| Current Alaska Construction Contractor Applications and Forms | Registration, endorsement, bond and supporting-document requirements | All applicants |
| Current PSI Residential Contractor Endorsement Bulletin | Exam format, topic weights, approved references and exam-room rules | Residential Endorsement candidates |
| International Residential Code, 2018 Edition | Residential code, foundations, carpentry and life-safety requirements | Residential Endorsement candidates |
| Northern Comfort: Advanced Cold Climate Home Building Techniques, 2016 | Cold-climate foundations, framing, insulation, air and moisture control | Residential Endorsement candidates |
| ANSI/AWC NDS-2018 Wood Design Standards | Wood framing and structural design fundamentals | Residential Endorsement candidates |
| ANSI/AF&PA SDPWS-2015 | Wind, seismic, diaphragms and shear walls | Residential Endorsement candidates |
| 29 CFR Part 1926 - OSHA | Construction safety requirements | Residential and other applicable trade exam candidates |
| Administrator Candidate Bulletin | Exact books, code edition and exam rules for electrical or mechanical administrator category | Electrical / Mechanical contractor paths |
Do not mix book lists. Residential Contractor Endorsement, Electrical Administrator and Mechanical Administrator exams are different credentials and can use different code editions and reference libraries.
Exam rule: where an Alaska testing bulletin allows open-book references, prepare only the materials permitted for that exam and follow the current rules on tabs, highlighting, notes and loose papers.
The Residential Contractor Endorsement requires qualifying education and a PSI examination. The endorsement is tied to qualifying residential construction and is separate from the contractor registration.
Electrical contractors are Specialty Contractors and must have the appropriate Electrical Administrator assigned. Alaska currently lists six Electrical Administrator categories: Controls and Control Wiring (CNTL), Inside Communication (IC), Residential Wiring (RW), Outside Communications (OC), Unlimited Commercial Wiring (UCW) and Unlimited Line Work (UL). Mechanical Contractors must have the appropriate Mechanical Administrator assigned, with seven current categories: HCPP, CNTL, RHVC, RPHH, UCIP, UHVCS and UR.
General, Specialty and Handyman registrations have their own application, scope, bond and insurance requirements, so do not assume a Residential Endorsement exam is required for every Alaska contractor.
These credentials work together, but they are not interchangeable.
| Credential | Purpose | Key Point |
|---|---|---|
| General Contractor Registration | Broad multi-trade contractor registration | Residential endorsement may be required for qualifying residential work |
| Residential Contractor Endorsement | Individual credential supporting qualifying one-to-four-unit residential work | Requires cold-climate education and PSI exam |
| Specialty Contractor Registration | Approved specialty work generally using no more than three trades | Electrical is handled through specialty registration plus administrator qualification |
| Electrical Administrator | Supervisory qualification for CNTL, IC, RW, OC, UCW or UL scope | Separate professional license from contractor registration; State approval required before PSI testing |
| Mechanical Administrator | Supervisory qualification for HCPP, CNTL, RHVC, RPHH, UCIP, UHVCS or UR | Separate professional license from contractor registration; State approval required before PSI testing |
| Alaska Business License | Authority to conduct business in Alaska | Separate from professional contractor registration |
Build the stack correctly. A contractor business can need entity registration, professional contractor registration, an endorsement or administrator assignment, bond/insurance and a business license.
Use the first weeks to confirm classification, then spend the remaining time on the exact exam or administrator credential that applies.
The difficulty comes from choosing the correct registration and then completing the separate requirements attached to that path. A contractor can have the right trade knowledge and still lose time by preparing for the wrong examination or missing an endorsement, administrator assignment, bond or business-license step.
Structured Alaska contractor exam prep reduces that risk by turning the process into a sequence: classification, credential, references, exam, application and compliance.
Passing an exam completes only the testing component for the credential involved. It does not automatically issue the contractor registration.
Complete the current Alaska application, bond, insurance, entity, assignment and professional-license requirements for the selected contractor path. Residential Endorsement applicants must also coordinate the endorsement with the applicable contractor registration.
After professional registration is complete, finish the Alaska business licensing step and maintain renewals, assigned endorsements or administrators and continuing requirements.
Select preparation based on the credential you actually need rather than using one generic exam package for every Alaska contractor classification.

Exam preparation helps you pass required tests, but actual contracting authority comes from the registration, endorsement and professional licenses issued under Alaska law.
· Use the contractor class that matches the work performed
· Hold or assign the Residential Contractor Endorsement when required
· Assign the correct Electrical or Mechanical Administrator for regulated trade work
· Maintain bond, insurance and Alaska business licensing requirements
Use the correct licensing path before advertising, bidding, contracting or performing regulated work.
