What Is an Alabama Plumbing Contractor?
Alabama regulates individual plumbers and plumbing companies through the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board. The main certification levels are Apprentice Plumber, Journeyman Plumber and Master Plumber. A registered company that bids on or performs plumbing work must designate a Principal Master who is responsible for the company's work.
Short answer: A Journeyman Plumber performs plumbing installation, repair and replacement while working for a registered company under the required supervision structure. A Master Plumber may perform or supervise plumbing work and may register as the Principal Master for a business.

The Alabama Business and Law Exam for Master Plumbers
Effective January 1, 2026, every new master-level applicant must pass the applicable master trade exam and the separate Business and Law exam. The business test has 40 questions, allows two hours and requires 70 percent to pass.
The outline covers business organization, contracts, estimating, financial management, labor laws, licensing laws, lien laws, project management, risk management, safety and environmental responsibilities, board rules, payroll and employment taxes. Board rules are the largest individual category.
If a candidate passes one required master examination and fails the other, the current packet says the candidate retakes only the failed examination. A candidate obtaining both Master Plumber and Master Gas Fitter certifications generally completes Business and Law with the first new master credential.

How Hard Is the Alabama Plumbing Exam?

After You Pass the Alabama Plumbing Exam
Prov scores the computerized exam and reports the result to the Alabama board. Passing the test does not by itself complete certification. Submit the appropriate post-exam packet and obtain certification within 90 calendar days or retesting may be required.
For master candidates, the 90-day certification period begins after both the Master Plumber and Business and Law examinations have been passed. If you plan to perform gas fitting, maintain the separate gas-fitting credential required by the board.
Journeyman and master certificate holders must also track annual certification and current continuing education requirements. Plumbing-only certificate holders currently complete four hours of qualifying plumbing or business and compliance education unless an exemption applies.
