Hawaii terminology matters: Hawaii does not use “Master Electrician” as the official title of its broad statewide master-level license. The comparable credential is Supervising Electrician (ES). Electrical contracting requires a separate contractor license.
Hawaii's Supervising Electrician license authorizes a qualified electrician to direct and supervise electrical work and to personally perform electrical work.
Candidates must first qualify through the Hawaii Board of Electricians and Plumbers. After Board approval, the exam is scheduled through PSI.

NEC edition note: the current PSI Hawaii bulletin lists the 2020 NEC as the reference supplied at the Supervising Electrician exam. The 1 Exam Prep package uses the 2026 NEC for current-code education and advanced code-navigation practice.
The standard Hawaii qualification for Supervising Electrician requires four years of experience as a licensed Journey Worker Electrician or equivalent experience accepted by the Hawaii Board of Electricians and Plumbers.
Journey Worker experience matters: the Supervising Electrician credential is an advanced license built on demonstrated electrician experience.
Hawaii does not currently reciprocate electrician licenses with other jurisdictions. Out-of-state candidates must document experience in the manner required by the Hawaii Board.
Move from Journey Worker experience through Board approval, PSI examination and the separate contractor career path.
Build the four years of licensed Journey Worker Electrician experience or accepted equivalent experience required for Supervising Electrician eligibility.
Prepare Hawaii's required experience-verification forms and supporting licensing documentation.
Submit the Supervising Electrician application for Board review and examination eligibility.
Board approval is required before registering for the PSI examination.
Focus on services, grounding, conductors, power, motors, calculations and fast NEC navigation.
Complete 70 scored questions within 180 minutes and earn at least a 70 percent score.
Supervising Electrician licensing does not itself authorize an electrical contracting business. Hawaii C-13 contractor licensing is a separate process.
