Important South Carolina licensing fact: the former General Roofing and Specialty Roofing classifications have been consolidated into the current Roofing, RF subclassification. The scope now covers roofing and roof decking on commercial, industrial, residential, and institutional structures using materials that create a water-tight and weather-resistant surface.
South Carolina Roofing Contractor Exam Prep is focused preparation for contractors and qualifying parties pursuing the Roofing RF specialty subclassification through the South Carolina Contractors' Licensing Board.
The Roofing scope includes the installation and repair of roofs and roof decking on commercial, industrial, residential, and institutional structures.
The classification includes cedar, cement, asbestos, clay tile, composition shingles, metal coverings, wood shakes, single-ply systems, built-up roofing, protective and reflective roof and deck coatings, sheet-metal valleys, flashings, gravel stops, gutters, downspouts, and bituminous waterproofing.
The technical examination focuses on the systems a roofing contractor actually encounters: deck conditions, steep-slope assemblies, metal panels, flashing details, repairs, elastomeric systems, built-up roofing, estimating, building-code rules, and safety.
Trade exam: 65 questions.
Time: 3 hours.
Passing requirement: 46 correct answers.
Format: open book.

The current South Carolina Roofing examination contains eight official subject areas. Steep-Slope Roofing is by far the largest category with 22 questions.
Roofing Substrate and Metal Flashing contain 8 questions each. Metal Panel Roofing, Elastomeric Roofing, and Built-Up Bituminous Roofing contain 6 questions each. Safety contains 5, and Roofing Repairs contains 4.
Steep-slope roofing alone represents almost one-third of the exam. Candidates should know roof coverings, underlayments, deck preparation, fastening, ventilation, valleys, hips, ridges, eaves, rakes, penetrations, flashing, drainage, and weather protection.
The rest of the test moves quickly between different systems. One question may involve a deck condition. The next may involve architectural metal flashing, OSHA fall protection, a membrane system, or built-up roofing. The roof is still above your head, but the book you need may change every few minutes.
Study by the official PSI weighting and by roofing system. Do not give every reference the same amount of time. Steep-slope roofing carries 22 questions, so it deserves serious attention.
Steep-Slope Roofing: study coverings, underlayments, fastening, ventilation, valleys, hips, ridges, eaves, rakes, penetrations, drainage, and flashing.
Roofing Substrate: review deck materials, attachment, moisture, surface condition, compatibility, preparation, and repair.
Metal Flashing: study edge metal, valleys, counterflashing, base flashing, parapets, curbs, penetrations, laps, joints, sealants, and drainage.
Low-Slope Systems: review elastomeric, membrane, metal panel, SPF, and built-up roofing materials and installation practices.
Safety: know fall protection, ladders, scaffolds, PPE, material handling, tools, electrical hazards, and housekeeping.
The South Carolina Roofing Contractor Highlighted & Tabbed Book Package brings the current roofing, estimating, code, NRCA, flashing, and OSHA references together for open-book practice.
Roofing questions get easier when you first identify the system. A steep-slope shingle question belongs in a different reference than a membrane seam, architectural metal flashing detail, or OSHA fall-protection question.

Move from the RF Roofing classification through PSI testing, Business Management and Law, qualifying-party certification, financial qualification, and final General Contractor licensing.
Review the South Carolina Roofing scope and make sure it matches the work your business intends to contract for.
Exam-route applicants generally need at least two years of applicable roofing work experience completed within the previous five years.
Prepare Roofing Construction and Estimating, the current PSI-listed building code, NRCA roofing manuals, and OSHA 29 CFR Part 1926.
Study Safety, Substrate, Steep-Slope Roofing, Metal Panel Roofing, Metal Flashing, Repairs, Elastomeric Roofing, and Built-Up Bituminous Roofing.
Prepare for 65 questions, three hours, and 46 correct answers required.
Commercial Roofing candidates must also pass the separate South Carolina Business Management and Law examination.
Submit the required qualifying-party paperwork, work-experience affidavit, and examination PASS information.
Choose Group 1 through Group 5, provide financial documentation or the qualifying surety bond, and finish the company licensing application.
The bars below compare the current 65-question PSI Roofing examination outline.
Study priority: Steep-Slope Roofing, Roofing Substrate, and Metal Flashing combine for 38 of the 65 questions. That is more than half of the entire examination.
The current PSI Roofing exam uses seven principal references. Always verify the live candidate bulletin before purchasing books or taking the examination.

Roofing RF is a General Contractor specialty subclassification. It covers roof and roof-deck installation and repair where the work creates a water-tight and weather-resistant surface.
The modern Roofing classification replaced the former General Roofing and Specialty Roofing classifications. It now brings a broad range of roof systems under one current classification.
The Roofing scope includes shingles, clay and cement products, metal roofing, wood shakes, single-ply roofing, built-up roofing, protective roof coatings, flashing, gravel stops, gutters, downspouts, and bituminous waterproofing.
General Contractors-Building also include Roofing within the broader Building classification. A business pursuing Roofing as its specialty can qualify directly for the RF subclassification instead of pretending every roof job needs to become an entire building project.
Roofing contractors must remain within their licensed scope. Structural framing, mechanical systems, electrical work, and other separately regulated work may require an appropriately licensed contractor when the project moves beyond roofing.
Roofing RF is a General Contractor subclassification, so the General Contractor financial-group limits apply.
| Group | Bid / Job Limit | Working Capital | Net Worth / Equity | Surety Bond |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | $100,000 | $10,000 | $20,000 | $20,000 |
| Group 2 | $400,000 | $40,000 | $60,000 | $60,000 |
| Group 3 | $1,000,000 | $100,000 | $150,000 | $150,000 |
| Group 4 | $3,000,000 | $175,000 | $250,000 | $250,000 |
| Group 5 | Unlimited | $250,000 | $350,000 | $350,000 |
Financial qualification: an applicant using a financial statement must satisfy either the working-capital requirement or the net-worth / total-equity requirement for the requested group. Both are not required. A qualifying surety bond can also be used under the Board's rules.
Commercial threshold: South Carolina generally requires the appropriate General or Mechanical Contractor license for regulated commercial construction when the total cost of construction is greater than $10,000.
Renewal: General Contractor licenses expire October 31 of even-numbered years.
Build roof-system knowledge, code speed, estimating confidence, flashing skills, safety awareness, and open-book navigation without trying to meet all seven references for the first time at the testing center.
The South Carolina Roofing exam is challenging because it expects you to move between very different roof systems while managing a large open-book reference library.
Steep-Slope Roofing contains 22 questions, which makes it the biggest target. But another 43 questions are waiting in substrates, metal flashing, metal panels, elastomeric systems, built-up roofing, repairs, and safety.
The exam also rewards people who understand water movement. Many roofing problems come back to the same question: where is the water supposed to go, and what detail keeps it out of the place where it definitely should not go?
Open-book navigation is a major skill. Knowing that the answer is "in one of those blue NRCA books" is not quite fast enough with a three-hour clock.
Strong preparation combines roofing knowledge, reference familiarity, estimating practice, and timed questions.
Pacing tip: 65 questions in 180 minutes gives you an average of about 2 minutes and 46 seconds per question. Answer fast knowledge questions first and save deeper book searches for the second pass.
Business & Law reminder: the Roofing technical exam does not replace the separate South Carolina Business Management and Law for Commercial Contractors exam.
