Important 2026 Oregon electrical update: the 2026 Oregon Electrical Specialty Code became effective October 1, 2026 and is based on the 2026 NEC. For your actual General Journeyman Electrician exam, use the approved testing-material list in your BCD Letter of Authorization as the final authority for what you may bring into the testing room.
Oregon Journeyman Electrician Contractor Exam Prep is technical preparation for the statewide General Journeyman Electrician license issued through the Oregon Building Codes Division.
The General Journeyman Electrician may make electrical installations under the supervision, direction, and control of a General Supervising Electrician unless the work falls under another supervision rule or does not require supervision.
The word "contractor" needs a little explanation in Oregon. The General Journeyman Electrician license belongs to the individual electrician. An Electrical Contractor license belongs to the company. An unrestricted Oregon Electrical Contractor business needs an active CCB license and an appropriate full-time signing supervisor. For the unrestricted Electrical Contractor (C) license, Oregon's contractor application identifies the General Supervising Electrician as the qualified signing supervisor.
Individual credential: Oregon General Journeyman Electrician (J).
Exam: 52 questions.
Time: 3 hours.
Passing score: 75%, which equals 39 correct answers out of 52.
Format: open book.
Business side: Electrical Contractor (C) plus an active CCB license and qualified signing supervisor.
The 2026 Oregon Journeyman Electrician + Electrician Calculations Study Guides + National Electrical Code Combo combines Oregon journeyman study with electrical calculations and the 2026 NEC.
Separate your individual electrician license from the licenses required to operate an electrical contracting company.

Oregon General Journeyman Electrician preparation should cover far more than simply flipping through the NEC. A strong study plan includes electrical theory, calculations, branch circuits, feeders, services, conductor sizing, grounding and bonding, wiring methods, raceways, boxes, overcurrent protection, motors, transformers, lighting, equipment, special occupancies, special equipment, limited-energy concepts, safety, and Oregon-specific amendments and licensing rules.
Apprenticeship training standards in Oregon also emphasize electrical mathematics, safety, blueprint reading, electrical theory, NEC use, construction wiring, transformers, motors, motor controls, grounding and bonding, fundamental NEC calculations, and simulated examination practice.
The exam is open book, but that does not mean you have time to meet the NEC for the first time during Question 17. Code navigation should become a practiced skill long before test day.
Study the current Oregon electrical code while matching your actual exam-room books to your Letter of Authorization. Oregon's current 2026 OESC is based on the 2026 NEC, but BCD's authorization letter is the final source for the references approved for your scheduled exam.
Code preparation: practice services, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, grounding, bonding, wiring methods, raceways, boxes, motors, transformers, equipment, special occupancies, and special systems.
Electrical calculations: practice load calculations, conductor sizing, voltage drop, box fill, raceway fill, motors, transformers, overcurrent protection, and service and feeder problems.
Oregon preparation: review Oregon electrical amendments, licensing rules, electrical laws, safety requirements, and current OESC changes.
Open-book speed: learn the topic before the lookup. Searching the whole NEC for every question is technically a strategy, but not a very friendly one.
Journeyman-level electrical calculations become easier when you use a consistent method. Identify the system, write down the known values, choose the correct formula or NEC table, complete the calculation, and then verify that the final result meets the code requirement.

Move from qualifying apprenticeship or experience through the J exam, then continue toward supervising and contractor-business licensing if that is your goal.
Determine whether you qualify through an approved Oregon apprenticeship or one of the accepted out-of-state education and experience routes.
Collect apprenticeship records, classroom transcripts, employer verification, work-category hours, and other application documents.
Submit a complete Oregon BCD application and Electrical Experience Verification forms where required.
After BCD approves your application, you receive authorization explaining how to schedule the exam and which testing materials are approved.
Study the 2026 OESC, 2026 NEC concepts, Oregon rules, electrical theory, calculations, and the exact references authorized for your test.
Complete the 52-question open-book examination within three hours and earn at least 75 percent.
Complete required continuing education. Electricians planning to move into responsible charge can later pursue the General Supervising Electrician license after meeting the additional experience requirements.
If you plan to operate an unrestricted electrical contracting company, obtain the Electrical Contractor (C) company license, maintain an active CCB license, and employ a full-time General Supervising Electrician as the signing supervisor.
Oregon's public licensing information reviewed for this guide does not publish an official question-by-question General Journeyman exam blueprint. These bars are study priorities based on Oregon training subjects and journeyman-level exam preparation, not official exam percentages.
Important: these bars are preparation priorities, not an official Oregon question-count breakdown. Cover the full electrical trade and all references approved for your examination.
Oregon tells approved candidates which materials may be used on their licensing examination. Treat the Letter of Authorization as the final word for your scheduled test.
| Reference / Resource | Primary Study Use | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Oregon Electrical Specialty Code | Current Oregon electrical requirements and amendments | Effective October 1, 2026 and based on the 2026 NEC |
| 2026 NFPA 70 National Electrical Code | Services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding, bonding, conductors, wiring methods, raceways, boxes, motors, transformers, special occupancies, and equipment | Use with current Oregon amendments when studying the 2026 OESC |
| BCD Letter of Authorization | Exam scheduling and approved testing materials | Use the exact approved-material list that BCD sends for your exam |
| Oregon Electrical Licensing Rules | Journeyman scope, experience requirements, contractor supervision, licensing, and Oregon electrical rules | Review current OAR 918-282 provisions applicable to your license |
| 1 Exam Prep 2026 NEC Study Material | Code review, calculations, practice questions, services, feeders, grounding, motors, conductors, and open-book preparation | Study support is not automatically approved for the testing room unless BCD lists it |
Exam-reference rule: your Oregon BCD Letter of Authorization contains the approved testing-material list. That list controls what you may use during the exam.
The Oregon General Journeyman Electrician license and the Oregon Electrical Contractor company license are not the same credential.
The J license belongs to the individual electrician. It proves the electrician has met the applicable training, experience, and examination requirements for general journey-level electrical installations.
The Electrical Contractor (C) license belongs to the company. Oregon defines it as the specialized license allowing a company to engage in the business of making electrical installations.
For an unrestricted C license, the business must register its business name, maintain an active CCB license, and employ the required full-time signing supervisor. Oregon's contractor application chart identifies the General Supervising Electrician as the qualified signing supervisor for an unrestricted Electrical Contractor.
This means earning your General Journeyman Electrician license is a major career step, but it does not by itself turn the company truck into an unrestricted Oregon electrical contracting business. The business side brings another set of licenses to the party.
Use the correct individual or business credential for the work you intend to perform.
| Credential | Main Purpose | Important Difference |
|---|---|---|
| General Journeyman Electrician (J) | Make general electrical installations under required supervision | Individual statewide electrical license |
| General Supervising Electrician (S) | Design, plan, lay out work, sign permits, and direct or supervise electrical service installations | Advanced individual license and unrestricted Electrical Contractor signing-supervisor credential |
| Electrical Contractor (C) | Allow a company to engage in the business of making electrical installations | Company license, not an individual journeyman license |
| CCB Contractor License | Meet Oregon construction contractor business licensing requirements | An active CCB license is a prerequisite for the Oregon Electrical Contractor company license |
| Reciprocal General Journeyman | Qualifying route for electricians licensed in reciprocating states | Current Oregon J reciprocity includes Arkansas, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, subject to Oregon's qualification rules |
Additional Oregon experience route: Oregon also provides a General Journeyman qualification route using 16,000 hours of verified out-of-state on-the-job electrical experience, including at least 2,000 hours in each required residential, commercial, and industrial category and compliance with the 300 percent rule.
Build electrical-code knowledge, calculation accuracy, and fast open-book navigation before your 52-question Oregon exam.
The Oregon General Journeyman Electrician exam is challenging because it combines NEC knowledge, Oregon amendments, calculations, electrical theory, practical field judgment, and open-book code navigation.
You receive three hours for 52 questions. That gives you an average of about 3.46 minutes per question. You need at least 75 percent to pass, which means 39 correct answers on a 52-question examination.
Three and a half minutes can disappear quickly when a service calculation decides it wants three tables, an exception, and a conductor adjustment factor before breakfast.
The strongest candidates practice both understanding and retrieval. Know the electrical concept first. Then use the approved references to confirm the rule efficiently.
The October 2026 OESC adoption also makes reference verification important. Study the current 2026 code, but bring only the materials approved for your examination by BCD.
Oregon testing timeline: BCD currently requires the licensing exam to be taken within 60 days of the Letter of Authorization. Candidates who fail must wait 30 days before retesting, and Oregon asks candidates to allow up to two weeks to receive results.
Exam-room reminder: 1 Exam Prep materials are study resources. Only bring a study book, code book, tab system, or other reference into the Oregon licensing exam if it is permitted by the approved testing-material list sent by BCD.
