Important New Jersey licensing fact: New Jersey's official advanced state credential is the Electrical Contractor license. “Master Electrician” is commonly used for study and search purposes, but the Board's licensing structure centers on Electrical Contractor licensure and Class A Journeyman Electrician licensing.
New Jersey Master Electrician Contractor Exam Prep is advanced study for electricians working toward the state's Electrical Contractor license.
The licensing examination is administered by PSI for the New Jersey Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors. Candidates must pass three separate examinations: Electrical Contractor, Alarm Systems Contractor, and Business and Law.
The electrical portion is broad. It covers general electrical knowledge, raceways, enclosures, services, feeders, branch circuits, overcurrent protection, conductors, grounding and bonding, equipment, motors, controls, low-voltage circuits, communications and safety.
Official New Jersey credential: Electrical Contractor.
Master Electrician terminology: useful for advanced electrical study and common search language, but it is not a separate statewide New Jersey license title.
Testing provider: PSI administers the three examinations after the Board approves a candidate's eligibility.
The 2026 New Jersey Master Electrician Study Guide + Flash Card Combo includes 12 practice exams, 2 full final exams and active-recall review for advanced electrician study.
Complete the required apprenticeship and journeyman experience before applying for the three-part PSI licensing examination.
| Stage | Requirement | What to Verify |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Apprenticeship | Four-year approved apprenticeship | U.S. Department of Labor-approved electrical apprenticeship completion |
| Journeyman Experience | One additional year after apprenticeship | Qualifying practical hands-on electrical experience |
| Contractor Application | Board review | Application, apprenticeship certificate, work certifications and current supporting documents |
| Examination Authorization | New Jersey Board approval | Examination Eligibility Notice before PSI scheduling |
| Electrical Contractor Exam | 100-question PSI examination | Current blueprint, 2023 NEC and testing rules |
| Alarm Systems Exam | 50-question PSI examination | NFPA 72, security, low-voltage and CCTV references |
| Business and Law Exam | 50-question PSI examination | Current NASCLA New Jersey business reference |
| Electrical Contractor License | Complete final Board requirements | License and business-permit requirements after passing |
Current Board, PSI, New Jersey code and 1 Exam Prep information were checked separately so the official Electrical Contractor license is not confused with informal Master Electrician terminology.
| Verified Point | Authority | Current Result |
|---|---|---|
| Official credential | New Jersey Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors | Electrical Contractor license |
| Contractor qualification path | Current Board FAQ | Four-year DOL-approved apprenticeship followed by one additional journeyman year |
| Required examinations | PSI March 2026 bulletin | Electrical Contractor, Alarm Systems Contractor, and Business and Law |
| Electrical Contractor exam | PSI March 2026 bulletin | 100 questions and 70% passing |
| Electrical exam code | PSI | 2023 NEC supplied at the test center |
| Current NJ Electrical Subcode | New Jersey Department of Community Affairs | 2023 NEC, adopted August 17, 2026 |
| 1 Exam Prep study materials | Direct 1 Exam Prep listings | 2026 NEC-based Master Electrician study guides, practice exams, calculation materials and flash cards |
The current New Jersey Electrical Contractor examination contains 100 scored questions and requires 70 correct answers to pass.
The PSI bulletin's table still displays 260 minutes, but its footnote states that the effective time was reduced to 255 minutes. For current planning, treat the exam as roughly four hours and fifteen minutes and always confirm your PSI appointment details.
Grounding and Bonding is the largest content area with 16 questions. Motors and Controls follows with 12. General Electrical Knowledge, Raceways and Enclosures, and Services, Feeders and Branch Circuits contain 10 questions each.
Those categories reward electricians who know the NEC structure before test day. PSI gives you a code book, but it does not give you a tiny electrical wizard who whispers the correct Article number into your ear.
Build your study schedule around the PSI blueprint instead of reading the NEC from cover to cover and hoping your brain politely stores all 900-plus pages.
Start with grounding and bonding. At 16 questions, it is the largest current Electrical Contractor category.
Give motors and controls serious study time. This category contains another 12 questions.
Practice without personal NEC markings. PSI provides the 2023 NEC during the Electrical Contractor exam, so your personal highlighting and tabs will not travel into the test with you.
Prepare for all three exams. Electrical Contractor applicants also need Alarm Systems and Business and Law.
Advanced electrical contractor questions can combine calculations, code lookup and practical field judgment. The strongest approach is to identify the system first and then choose the NEC article, table or calculation method that controls the answer.

Use a repeatable method: identify the equipment or system, write down the known values, locate the correct rule or table, complete the calculation, check exceptions and then select the answer.
Move from apprenticeship through journeyman experience, Board approval and the three PSI examinations.
The Board's current FAQ identifies a four-year U.S. Department of Labor-approved electrical apprenticeship as the standard contractor examination path.
Build qualifying practical hands-on experience after completing the apprenticeship program.
Provide the Board with the required application, apprenticeship and work-experience documentation.
Wait for Board approval before scheduling the initial PSI examinations.
Study the Electrical Contractor, Alarm Systems Contractor, and Business and Law portions as one complete licensing project.
First-time candidates approved under the current process are required to take all three examinations on the same day.
After passing, follow the Board's instructions for final license issuance and any applicable electrical business-permit requirements.
These counts follow the current PSI Electrical Contractor content outline. Bar lengths compare each category with the largest 16-question Grounding and Bonding section.
The three examinations use different reference rules. Follow the current PSI bulletin for your scheduled test.
| Reference | Main Use | Exam-Day Rule |
|---|---|---|
| NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, 2023 | Electrical Contractor and Alarm Systems code questions | PSI supplies the code book. Candidates may not use their own NEC or mark PSI's copy |
| NASCLA Contractors' Guide to Business, Law and Project Management - New Jersey, 2nd Edition | Business and Law examination | Candidate brings the approved reference; highlighting, underlining and permanent indexing are permitted before testing |
| NFPA 72 National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, 2022 | Fire alarm portion of Alarm Systems examination | Candidate-supplied approved reference |
| NTC Security and Low Voltage References | Intrusion, security, video and low-voltage alarm-system questions | Candidate-supplied approved references according to current PSI list |
| CCTV From Light to Pixels, 3rd Edition | CCTV and video-security concepts | Candidate-supplied Alarm Systems reference |
| 2026 NEC Study Materials | Current-code education in 1 Exam Prep Master Electrician packages | Do not substitute the 2026 NEC for PSI's required 2023 NEC examination reference |
NEC warning: PSI currently supplies the 2023 NEC for the Electrical Contractor examination. You may not use your personal copy, and you may not write, highlight, underline or index the supplied code book.
Many electricians search for a New Jersey Master Electrician license because that is the title used by other states. New Jersey organizes its licensing differently.
The advanced state license for electrical contracting is the Electrical Contractor license. The Board separately licenses or regulates qualified journeyman electricians, while the contractor credential carries the state contracting and business responsibilities.
Master Electrician exam prep: useful description for advanced NEC, calculations and contractor-level electrical study.
Official New Jersey credential: Electrical Contractor license.
Official testing path: Electrical Contractor + Alarm Systems Contractor + Business and Law.
All three PSI examinations test a different part of licensed electrical contracting.
| Examination | Current Format | Main Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical Contractor | 100 questions • 70% passing • current effective time 255 minutes | NEC, grounding, motors, services, raceways, conductors, low voltage and safety |
| Alarm Systems Contractor | 50 questions • 165 minutes • 70% passing | Fire alarms, intrusion, security, installation, wiring and special conditions |
| Business and Law | 50 questions • 130 minutes • 70% passing | Licensing, bidding, contracts, project management, finance, labor, tax and lien law |
| First-Time Candidate | All three exams required on the same day | Technical knowledge, alarm systems, business knowledge and testing stamina |
| Retesting | Failed portions only after the required waiting period | Current PSI rules require all three exams to be passed within the permitted attempt and eligibility limits |
Build technical electrical knowledge while rotating Alarm Systems and Business and Law into the schedule every week.
New Jersey's licensing process is demanding because it does not stop with one electrical exam. Candidates must pass technical electrical, alarm-system, and contractor business examinations.
The Electrical Contractor portion alone contains 100 questions, with Grounding and Bonding carrying 16 and Motors and Controls carrying 12.
Another challenge is the NEC rule. PSI provides the 2023 NEC at the testing center. That means the beautiful personal tab system you spent an entire Saturday building stays home. Your real advantage is knowing the structure of the code well enough to navigate a clean copy.
First-time candidates must also take all three examinations on the same day under the current PSI process. That makes pacing, concentration and reference familiarity especially important.
Code-edition reminder: the 1 Exam Prep 2026 Master Electrician products use the 2026 NEC for current-code education. The current New Jersey PSI Electrical Contractor examination uses the 2023 NEC supplied by PSI. Train with the newer materials if desired, but prepare specifically for the 2023 NEC structure and rules used on your scheduled New Jersey exam.
