Important Utah licensing fact: the Utah Master Electrician license is an individual electrical credential. It is not the same as the E200 General Electrical Contractor business license. However, Utah requires an electrical contractor to have a Master Electrical qualifier, which makes the Master credential a major step toward operating or qualifying an electrical contracting business.
The Utah Master Electrician license is the state's advanced individual electrical credential. It is issued through Utah DOPL to applicants who satisfy one of the approved education and experience pathways and pass the required Master examination.
Master Electricians are experienced electrical professionals who may take on advanced technical, supervisory, code-compliance, and licensing responsibilities. The credential is also used as the Master Electrical qualification required for Utah electrical contractor licensing.
Utah provides several ways to qualify for the Master license. The most common field-experience path requires 8,000 hours of experience as a licensed Journeyman Electrician. Degree-based alternatives can reduce that Journeyman-hour requirement when the specific education requirements are satisfied.

Master exam change: beginning August 1, 2025, Utah replaced the former separate Master Theory and Code exams with the current Master Electrician Rule and Laws examination.
The current Utah Master Electrician Rule and Laws Exam contains 80 questions across twenty-one published subject areas.
Unlike the Utah Journeyman written exam, the Master examination puts much heavier emphasis on licensing law, administrative rules, professional responsibility, state amendments, and workplace safety.
The largest categories are Current, Resistance, Voltage Drop and the DOPL Licensing Act, with 8 questions each.
The Construction Trades Licensing Act, Electricians Licensing Act Administrative Rule, and General DOPL Licensing Laws Administrative Rule each contain 7 questions.
Grounding & Bonding and NFPA 70E each contain 5 questions. Utah Labor Code also contains 5 questions.
Services, Feeders & Branch Circuits and Utah NEC Amendments each contain 4 questions.
The exam still includes technical electrical questions, but the Master credential is clearly asking something bigger: can you understand the electrical work and the legal responsibilities that come with being the person in charge?
Do not study this like another Journeyman exam. The current Utah Master exam puts a major share of its questions on Utah law, DOPL rules, safety, state amendments, and professional licensing responsibilities.
DOPL Licensing Act: learn how the Division operates, license authority, disciplinary provisions, unlawful conduct, and professional responsibilities.
Construction Trades Licensing Act: study Utah contractor licensing, qualifiers, trade classifications, supervision, and construction-trade responsibilities.
Electricians Licensing Rule: review electrician classifications, experience, supervision, scope, renewal, education, and Utah-specific electrical requirements.
Electrical Theory: practice current, resistance, Ohm's law, voltage drop, power relationships, and field calculations.
NFPA 70E: review electrical safety, risk, PPE, safe work practices, and responsibilities around energized work.
Utah NEC Amendments: do not assume the national NEC text is the final answer when Utah has adopted a state-specific amendment.
For combined code and calculation study, review the Utah Master Electrician + Electrician Calculations Study Guides & 2023 NEC Combo .
The Utah Master exam mixes electrical knowledge with licensing law and safety. You may answer an Ohm's law question, then jump into DOPL discipline, then grounding, then NFPA 70E, then a Utah NEC amendment. The fastest way to get lost is to treat every reference book like it covers everything.
Utah Master Electrician preparation for licensing law, safety, code navigation, and electrical calculations.
Move from qualifying education and experience through the Master Law and Rules exam, practical credit when applicable, Master licensure, and the optional E200 contractor path.
Use the 8,000-hour Journeyman route, the Associate degree plus 4,000 Journeyman-hour route, or the qualifying electrical engineering degree route.
Make sure your Apprentice or Journeyman experience matches the route you plan to use.
If you already passed the six-task Utah Electrician Practical Exam while earning your Journeyman license, you do not retake it for Master licensure.
Utah currently does not require DOPL preapproval before registering for the licensing examination, but you must meet the applicable eligibility requirements.
Complete 80 open-book questions within 240 minutes and earn at least 75 percent.
Candidates without previous Utah Journeyman practical credit must complete the six-task, 110-minute Utah Electrician Practical Exam.
Submit the final DOPL application, experience and education documentation, and current required fees.
If your goal is an electrical contracting business, complete the separate E200 contractor process, including the applicable Business and Law, experience, insurance, and qualifier requirements.
The current Master examination contains 80 questions. The bars below follow the current Prov content outline.
Law and rule emphasis: the DOPL Licensing Act, Construction Trades Licensing Act, Electricians Licensing Act Rule, and General DOPL Licensing Rules combine for 29 of the 80 questions.
Add Utah Labor Code, Utah Health and Safety, Utah Occupational Health and Safety, Utah NEC Amendments, and NFPA 70E, and a very large share of the exam is directly tied to law, regulation, state amendments, and safety.
The Master Law and Rules exam is open book. Use the current Prov bulletin as the final authority for exact reference editions and testing-room rules.

Code-edition note: 1 Exam Prep offers both 2023 NEC and newer 2026 NEC Master Electrician study products. The current official Utah Master exam bulletin lists the 2023 NEC for the examination reference set. Use the current bulletin when choosing final exam-room materials.
Current Prov reference preparation: approved books may be highlighted, underlined, and prepared with permanent tabs before testing. Moveable tabs, Post-it-style notes, and unauthorized handwritten notes are not permitted. Candidates may not mark references during the exam.
The Utah Master Electrician credential represents an advanced level of electrical qualification, experience, supervision, and professional responsibility.
Master-level knowledge includes electrical code, services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding, bonding, conductors, equipment, motors, controls, safety, state amendments, and the legal responsibilities that apply to licensed electrical professionals.
The Master credential also has an important contractor role. Utah requires a Master Electrical qualifier for the E200 General Electrical Contractor classification.
Contractor distinction: a Master Electrician license does not automatically create an E200 General Electrical Contractor license. The contractor business must separately satisfy Utah contractor application, qualifier, experience, Business and Law, insurance, and other licensing requirements.
Utah separates individual electrical credentials from the contractor business classification used to operate an electrical contracting company.
| Credential | Main Purpose | Typical Path | Important Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice Electrician | Build supervised electrical experience | Register and work under licensed supervision | Entry point for qualifying electrical hours |
| Residential Journeyman Electrician | Journey-level residential electrical work | Residential education/experience route plus examinations | More limited scope than full Journeyman |
| Journeyman Electrician | Broad journey-level electrical work | Education + experience or experience-only path plus written and practical exams | Major experience pathway toward Master licensure |
| Master Electrician | Advanced electrical qualification and supervision | 8,000 Journeyman hours or qualifying degree-based alternative + Master exam | Can serve as Master Electrical qualifier for applicable electrical contractor licensing |
| E200 General Electrical Contractor | Operate a general electrical contracting business | Separate contractor application, Master Electrical qualifier, experience, Business and Law or applicable exemption, insurance, and contractor requirements | Business license rather than individual electrician credential |
Renewal: Utah electrical licenses currently renew by November 30 of even-numbered years. Electricians must complete 16 approved continuing-education hours per licensing period, including 12 core hours.
Build Utah law knowledge, reference navigation, electrical safety, NEC accuracy, and calculation speed together.
The Utah Master examination is different from many traditional Master Electrician exams because it strongly emphasizes state law, licensing rules, safety, and professional responsibility.
Candidates receive 240 minutes for 80 questions. That averages 3 minutes per question.
Three minutes sounds comfortable until one question sends you into the wrong Utah statute and the next sends you into NFPA 70E while your coffee quietly loses confidence in you.
The challenge is not only knowing electrical work. It is knowing which reference controls the question, where the answer lives, and how Utah's licensing responsibilities fit around the technical code.
Strong candidates practice reference identification as much as answer selection. Before solving a practice question, ask yourself: "is this NEC, NFPA 70E, DOPL, Construction Trades, Electricians Rule, Utah amendment, or workplace safety?" That habit saves time.
Practical note: if you passed the full Utah Electrician Practical Exam when earning your Journeyman Electrician license, Utah does not require you to take the same practical again for the Master Electrician license.
