Important New Jersey licensing fact: the current Class A Journeyman Electrician path is primarily based on documented practical experience and related classroom instruction. New Jersey's separate PSI three-part examination belongs to the Electrical Contractor licensing path, not the Class A Journeyman application.
The New Jersey Class A Journeyman Electrician license is an individual electrical credential administered by the New Jersey Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors.
The current licensing process focuses heavily on real electrical experience. Applicants document practical hands-on work installing, altering or repairing wiring for electric light, heat or power. They also document related classroom instruction.
That makes New Jersey different from states where the journeyman credential is built mainly around a statewide PSI or Prometric examination. Current New Jersey Board materials do not list a separate PSI Class A Journeyman examination in the same way they list the Electrical Contractor licensing examination.
Class A Journeyman Electrician: an individual New Jersey electrical credential based on the Board's current experience, classroom and application requirements.
Electrical Contractor: a separate New Jersey license connected to electrical contracting and business-permit authority.
Study preparation: NEC knowledge, calculations and trade review still matter for field competence, apprenticeship testing, employer evaluations and future contractor-level advancement.

New Jersey does not currently publish a separate statewide PSI Class A Journeyman exam blueprint with a state question count, time limit and passing score like many other states do.
That does not make electrical study unnecessary. Apprentices and journeyman candidates still need strong command of the National Electrical Code, electrical theory, calculations, wiring methods, services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding, motors and safe installation practices.
The practice exams in the 1 Exam Prep New Jersey Journeyman materials should be treated as study and knowledge-building tools. They are useful for apprenticeship tests, employer evaluations, NEC practice and future contractor-level preparation, but they should not be presented as an official New Jersey Class A Journeyman PSI examination.
No invented exam numbers: because the current New Jersey Class A application path does not publish a separate statewide PSI journeyman blueprint, this page does not invent a question count, time limit or state passing percentage.
Build your study plan around electrical skills you will actually use in the field and during future licensing advancement. Strong journeyman knowledge is much bigger than memorizing article numbers.
Learn NEC structure. Know where services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding, motors, wiring methods and special occupancies live.
Work electrical calculations. Practice conductor sizing, load calculations, voltage drop, motors, box fill, raceway fill and related math.
Review missed practice questions. A wrong answer is useful when you trace it back to the code rule or calculation that caused the mistake.
Separate code years. New Jersey's current electrical subcode is based on the 2023 NEC, while the 1 Exam Prep products on this page use the 2026 NEC for current-code study.
Journeyman-level electrical work requires both practical judgment and code knowledge. A good study routine mixes calculation problems with fast NEC navigation instead of treating those as separate worlds.

Use a repeatable process for every technical question. Identify the electrical system, write down the known values, locate the controlling code rule or table, perform the calculation and check the result.
Build the practical hours, classroom hours and documentation needed for the Class A Journeyman Electrician license.
Work under the appropriate apprentice or employee status and make sure your electrical work is properly supervised.
Accumulate hands-on experience installing, altering or repairing wiring for electric light, heat or power.
Maintain records of related electrical instruction through your apprenticeship, school or approved educational program.
At least 4,000 practical hours must fall within the five years before your Class A Journeyman application.
Do not wait until the last minute to track down employers, dates, duties and verification of your electrical experience.
Follow the current New Jersey Board application process and supply the required supporting documentation.
If contracting is your long-term goal, complete the required journeyman experience and prepare separately for the New Jersey Electrical Contractor licensing examinations.
These are study categories, not official New Jersey Class A exam percentages. The current Class A Journeyman licensing path does not publish a separate statewide PSI journeyman content blueprint.
Why no percentages? New Jersey's current Class A Journeyman application materials do not publish a separate statewide journeyman PSI exam blueprint. These bars show the major study areas covered by the 1 Exam Prep journeyman materials without inventing state scoring weights.
Use official New Jersey licensing documents for the credential requirements and electrical code materials for technical study.
| Reference | Primary Use | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| Class A Journeyman License Application | Official New Jersey licensing process | Use the current Board application and instructions |
| Class A Journeyman Work Certification | Document qualifying practical electrical experience | Keep employer information and work-hour records organized |
| New Jersey Electrical Laws and Board Rules | Licensing, supervision, contractor requirements and professional responsibilities | Use current state materials |
| National Electrical Code, 2023 | Current New Jersey electrical subcode and field-code familiarity | New Jersey adopted the 2023 NEC electrical subcode effective August 17, 2026 |
| National Electrical Code, 2026 | Current-code education in the 1 Exam Prep 2026 study products | Do not confuse a newer study edition with the NEC edition currently adopted by New Jersey |
| New Jersey Journeyman Electrician Study Guide | NEC study, calculations, practice questions and trade review | Study material, not a replacement for official licensing documentation |
The 1 Exam Prep practice exams can be used as open-book NEC drills even though New Jersey's Class A Journeyman license is not currently presented as a separate statewide PSI examination.
This distinction matters because many electricians search for “New Jersey Journeyman Electrician Contractor Exam Prep” while actually moving through two different licensing stages.
The Class A Journeyman Electrician license establishes an individual's journeyman electrical credential under the Board's rules. The Electrical Contractor license is the separate credential associated with electrical contracting and the business-permit process.
Class A Journeyman: focus on qualifying practical experience, classroom education, work certification and Board licensing.
Electrical Contractor: meet the contractor qualification requirements, obtain Board approval and pass the Electrical Contractor, Alarm Systems and Business and Law examinations.
Career planning: building strong journeyman-level NEC and calculation skills now can make contractor-level exam preparation much easier later.
New Jersey now uses several separate electrical license categories. Choose the one that matches your training and work role.
| Credential | Main Purpose | Important Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Class A Electrical Apprentice | Perform electrical work within an approved apprenticeship | Works within the scope of the apprenticeship under required supervision |
| Class A Journeyman Electrician | Individual journeyman-level electrical credential | Current path emphasizes practical experience, classroom instruction and licensing documentation |
| Class B Wireman | Perform electrical work corresponding to the worker's training and experience | Separate license category with supervision and employment requirements |
| Electrical Contractor | Operate in the electrical contracting business | Separate Board qualification and three-part PSI examination |
Use six focused weeks to strengthen trade knowledge while organizing the documentation needed for Class A licensing.
The difficult part is that New Jersey's Class A licensing path combines real-world experience, classroom instruction and paperwork. You cannot solve an experience shortage by getting really good at multiple-choice questions.
At the same time, completing the required hours does not automatically make NEC calculations easy. Journeyman-level electricians still need strong code navigation, grounding knowledge, conductor sizing, service calculations, motor rules and safe field judgment.
That is why a good preparation plan has two folders, even if one of them is imaginary: one for licensing documentation and one for electrical knowledge. Mixing them together usually creates a pile of papers and a headache.
Code-edition reminder: these 1 Exam Prep 2026 products use the 2026 NEC for current-code education. New Jersey's current electrical subcode is based on the 2023 NEC. Use the code edition required by the authority, employer, apprenticeship program or formal examination connected to your specific task.
