Important Pennsylvania licensing rule: there is no single statewide Journeyman Electrician license. Local jurisdictions may control electrician licenses, exams, experience requirements, code editions, renewal rules, contractor privileges, and reciprocity. Always verify the city or municipality where the electrical work will occur.
Pennsylvania Journeyman Electrician exam prep is preparation for local journeyman-level electrical licenses, certifications, examinations, apprenticeship advancement, and electrical trade qualifications within Pennsylvania.
The Commonwealth establishes a statewide construction-code framework through the Uniform Construction Code, but it does not operate one universal state journeyman-electrician licensing board for every electrician.
That makes Pennsylvania different from states where one state license automatically controls the entire journeyman path. Your real licensing authority may be a city, borough, township, or another local jurisdiction.
The City of Reading, for example, currently posts a Journeyman Electrician licensing path and identifies the ICC G17Y-2017 Journeyman Electrician examination. Philadelphia takes a different approach and licenses Electrical Contractors directly rather than issuing a separate Philadelphia Journeyman Electrician license.
Statewide Journeyman Electrician license: none.
Licensing level: commonly local or municipal.
Current PA UCC electrical baseline: 2020 NEC.
Reading example: ICC G17Y-2017 Journeyman Electrician.
G17 exam format: 80 questions, 4 hours, open book, 75% passing.
Contractor side: separate local contractor or master-level requirements may apply.
For code-focused review, see the 2026 Pennsylvania Journeyman Electrician Study Guide + NEC Combo with Tabs. This study product uses the 2026 NEC, so compare it with the code edition required by your actual Pennsylvania licensing exam.
Your exact license depends on the municipality where you plan to work.

Because Pennsylvania electrician licensing is local, there is no one statewide exam blueprint that every candidate must follow.
Even so, journeyman-level electrical testing consistently revolves around a familiar core: general electrical knowledge, services, service equipment, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, wiring methods, raceways, boxes, grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, equipment, control devices, motors, generators, transformers, special occupancies, special equipment, calculations, and safe installation practices.
The ICC G17 National Standard Journeyman Electrician outline provides a useful example because Reading's currently posted application specifically names the G17Y-2017 Journeyman Electrician exam.
The G17 exam is open book, but an open code book does not automatically equal an open door to a passing score. If every question turns into a treasure hunt through 900 pages, the clock wins.
Start with the licensing jurisdiction and exam code before deciding which NEC edition to buy. Pennsylvania's statewide UCC currently uses the 2020 NEC, Reading's posted journeyman path names a 2017 NEC-based ICC G17 exam, and 1 Exam Prep also offers newer 2026 NEC study materials.
Step 1: identify the city, borough, township, or authority issuing your license.
Step 2: verify the exact exam name and exam code.
Step 3: verify the NEC edition and supplementary references.
Step 4: review services, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, grounding, bonding, wiring methods, motors, equipment, and calculations.
Step 5: practice under the same open-book or closed-book format used by your examination.
The 2026 Pennsylvania Journeyman Electrician + Electrician Calculations + NEC Combo is especially useful for strengthening electrical math and code-navigation skills. Just remember that your exam provider controls the actual code edition permitted on test day.
Journeyman electrical exams often mix direct code questions with calculations and practical installation scenarios. Use a repeatable process: identify the electrical system, list the known values, determine the governing NEC rule or formula, calculate carefully, and then verify the answer against the applicable table or section.

In Pennsylvania, the first licensing step is identifying the correct municipality.
Determine which municipality, city, borough, township, or local authority regulates electrical licensing at the job location.
Confirm apprenticeship registration, classroom instruction, supervised work experience, employer documentation, and local application requirements.
Your jurisdiction may use an ICC National Standard exam, a locally modified examination, a master-level contractor examination, or another approved test.
Do not assume that the newest NEC is automatically used. Pennsylvania's statewide UCC baseline is 2020 NEC, while local licensing tests may reference another edition.
Practice the NEC index, common articles, high-use tables, services, feeders, grounding, conductors, motors, box fill, raceway fill, and load calculations.
Follow the test provider's current policies for approved references, identification, calculators, scheduling, retesting, and score requirements.
Submit your passing score and required apprenticeship, experience, identification, application, and fee documentation.
A journeyman credential does not automatically authorize independent contracting. Verify local master or electrical-contractor licensing and Pennsylvania HICPA registration where applicable.
Pennsylvania has no statewide journeyman exam blueprint. This G17 outline is especially useful because the City of Reading's posted licensing application identifies the G17Y-2017 Journeyman Electrician examination.
Reading study takeaway: Wiring Methods and Materials plus Branch Circuits and Conductors make up 45 percent of the G17 outline. Those two areas deserve serious repetition.
The correct NEC book depends on the local licensing exam. Verify the jurisdiction before bringing or purchasing final exam references.
| Reference / Jurisdiction | Primary Study Use | Important Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 National Electrical Code | Current Pennsylvania UCC electrical baseline | The 2026 Pennsylvania UCC framework currently relies on the 2020 NEC |
| 2017 National Electrical Code | Reading G17Y-2017 examination preparation | Reading's currently posted form names the 2017-version G17Y exam |
| Ugly's Electrical References | Electrical formulas, calculations, tables, conversions, and fast field reference | Commonly paired with ICC electrical examinations, including Philadelphia's current 211 exam |
| Philadelphia Electrical Requirements | Philadelphia Electrical Contractor licensing and local code compliance | Current ICC 211 exam references the 2020 NEC plus Ugly's Electrical Reference |
| 2026 NEC Study Materials | Updated electrical theory, future code-cycle study, calculations, practice questions, and code navigation | Current 1 Exam Prep Pennsylvania products use the 2026 NEC, which may be newer than your actual licensing exam |
The Reading G17-style examination and Philadelphia 211 Electrical Contractor examination are examples of open-book electrical tests. Other municipalities can use different exam formats, so always verify your actual test.
Open-book strategy: know the electrical concept first, then confirm the exact rule. The NEC works much better as a reference than as a four-hour scavenger hunt.
A local Pennsylvania Journeyman Electrician credential does not automatically authorize the holder to advertise, contract independently, pull every type of permit, or operate an electrical contracting business.
Reading separates Journeyman and Master Electrician licensing. Its current form requires the initial journeyman applicant to be employed by a registered master electrician.
Philadelphia uses another structure entirely. To perform electrical work in Philadelphia, including low-voltage wiring, an individual needs the City's Electrical Contractor License. Philadelphia currently requires at least four years of electrical employment for a licensed company, with limited education substitution available.
The Philadelphia applicant must also pass the required Electrical Contractor Examination, maintain the required insurance, satisfy tax and business-license rules, and meet continuing-education requirements.
Residential electrical contractors can have another state-level obligation. Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act generally requires registration when the contractor performs at least $5,000 of qualifying home improvements per year.
So a journeyman license proves individual trade competency. Running the business can require a different collection of licenses and registrations. Electricity travels fast. Licensing paperwork prefers the scenic route.
Use the correct credential for the jurisdiction and scope of work.
| Credential / Registration | Main Purpose | Important Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Local Journeyman Electrician | Perform journey-level electrical installation work under local requirements | Not one universal statewide Pennsylvania credential |
| Reading Journeyman Electrician | Local journey-level electrical installation credential | Current posted requirements include registered-master employment and ICC G17Y examination |
| Reading Master Electrician | Master-level electrical contracting qualification within Reading | Current form requires two years holding a qualifying journeyman license plus master examination |
| Philadelphia Electrical Contractor | Perform electrical work in Philadelphia | Philadelphia uses an Electrical Contractor license rather than a separate journeyman credential |
| PA Home Improvement Contractor Registration | State consumer-protection registration for qualifying residential home-improvement businesses | Not an electrician competency license and does not replace local electrical licensing |
Do not copy Reading's requirements into another city: they are a useful Pennsylvania example, not a statewide rule. Your municipality controls your actual electrician-license path.
Identify your exact local exam first, then build NEC speed, electrical math, and timed-test confidence.
There is no single Pennsylvania exam difficulty level because licensing is local.
For the G17-style exam used in Reading's published path, 80 questions must be completed in four hours. That gives an average of about three minutes per question.
The test is open book, but the largest subject area, Wiring Methods and Materials, covers 26 percent of the outline. Branch Circuits and Conductors add another 19 percent. That means nearly half the exam is concentrated in two broad NEC-heavy areas.
Calculation questions can also slow down otherwise strong candidates. Box fill, raceway fill, conductor ampacity, services, feeders, motors, and electrical loads all reward a repeatable calculation process.
The biggest Pennsylvania-specific challenge may happen before the test: preparing for the wrong local exam. Verify your jurisdiction first. Nobody wants to become a world-class expert in the wrong code edition.
ICC testing reminder: current ICC contractor/trades procedures can change. Recheck your exam catalog, approved references, ID rules, retest rules, and testing policies before your appointment.
Code-edition warning: current Pennsylvania-specific 1 Exam Prep products are available using the 2026 NEC, while Pennsylvania's current UCC baseline is 2020 NEC and Reading's posted G17Y examination is based on the 2017 NEC. Match your final exam preparation to the code edition required by your jurisdiction.
