Current Montana Journeyman exam: 60 questions, 180 minutes, 70% passing, open book, administered by PSI after Board approval, and currently based on the 2020 NEC.
Montana licenses Journeyman Electricians statewide through the Montana State Electrical Board. Candidates must qualify through an approved apprenticeship, trade-training route, practical-experience route or qualifying electrical-maintenance route before the Board approves them for PSI testing.
The current Journeyman examination is open book and tests National Electrical Code knowledge plus general trade knowledge and theory. Montana currently bases its electrician examinations on the 2020 NEC.
Exam: 60 questions | 3 hours | 70% passing.
References: 2020 NEC | Montana Building Codes Amendments | Printreading by David L. Hittinger, based on the 2020 NEC.
Experience: common route is 8,000 hours of legally obtained practical experience, with other statutory qualification paths also available.
Contractor path: a Montana Journeyman can serve as the responsible electrician for a limited electrical contractor.
The current Board exam sheet does not publish detailed scored percentages, so these are study areas rather than official topic weights.
| Study Area | What to Study | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| NEC Navigation | Definitions, Articles, tables, notes, exceptions and index use | Open-book exam requires fast lookup |
| Electrical Theory & Calculations | Ohm's law, loads, conductor sizing, voltage drop and trade math | General trade knowledge and theory |
| Services & Feeders | Service sizing, feeders, disconnects, overcurrent and grounding | Core NEC application |
| Branch Circuits | Loads, receptacles, GFCI, AFCI, conductors and protection | High-frequency field and code topic |
| Grounding & Bonding | Article 250 concepts, electrodes, bonding and equipment grounding | Safety-critical NEC topic |
| Wiring Methods | Raceways, cables, boxes, conductor fill and installation rules | Core construction knowledge |
| Motors & Controls | Motor conductors, overloads, controllers and disconnecting means | Calculation and equipment application |
| Montana Amendments & Printreading | State amendments and electrical plan interpretation | Approved exam references |
The Journeyman license is an individual credential. Montana separately licenses electrical contractor businesses.
Journeyman license: statewide individual electrician credential.
Limited electrical contractor: may use a Montana-licensed Journeyman Electrician as the full-time responsible electrician.
Limited contractor scope: residential construction with fewer than five living units in a single structure.
Unlimited contractor: requires a Montana-licensed Master Electrician as responsible electrician.
These bars are exam-prep priorities, not official Montana Board scoring percentages.
Use the exact current Board-approved references for the test. Newer NEC training does not replace the 2020 NEC exam reference.
| Reference | Current Use | Preparation Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 National Electrical Code | Primary licensing-exam code reference | Tabs, indexes, highlighting, underlining and prewritten notes are allowed under the current exam sheet |
| Montana Building Codes Amendments | Approved state-specific exam reference | Review Montana-specific changes before test day |
| Printreading by David L. Hittinger | Approved reference based on the 2020 NEC | Practice reading electrical drawings and layouts |
| 2026 NEC Study Materials | Current-code education | Useful for long-term code knowledge, but bring the 2020 NEC currently required for the exam |
Qualify, get Board approval, prepare the correct references, pass PSI, then maintain the license or advance toward contractor responsibility.
Use an approved apprenticeship, trade program, 8,000-hour practical-experience route or qualifying maintenance route.
Submit the application and experience documentation before attempting to schedule with PSI.
Only approved candidates may register for the Montana electrician exam through PSI.
Study the 2020 NEC, Montana amendments and approved print-reading material.
Build a three-minute-per-question rhythm and learn when to move past difficult calculations.
Complete 60 questions in 180 minutes and earn at least 70%.
Complete continuing education, renew on the Board cycle and consider the limited contractor or Master Electrician path.
Open-book strategy: 60 questions in 180 minutes means about 3 minutes per question. Identify the subject, locate the correct NEC Article or table, confirm the rule or exception, answer and move on.

A Journeyman Electrician is an individual trade license. Montana also licenses electrical contractor businesses and ties contractor scope to the responsible electrician's license level.
