    The State of Florida has two types of Contractor Licenses:

    1. 1. Certified Contractor License: A certified contractor is certified by the state and is allowed to work anywhere in the state of Florida.
    2. 2. Registered Contractor License: A registered contractor can only perform work within the city or county that issued the contractor license.

     

    To apply for a Certified Contractor License, the following are required:

    1. Age: Individuals applying for a contractor’s license in the State of Florida must be at least 18 years old.
    2. Exam: Two open book exams are required.
    3. 1) Business and Finance Exam
    4. 2) Trade Exam
    5. Experience: Applicants must provide proof of construction experience and/or construction related education. Years of experience required depends on the license being applied for.
    6. Fee: There is a required application fee specified in the application paperwork which must be made payable to the Department of Business and Professional Regulations. 
    7. Credit Report: A credit report from any of the 3 major credit reporting agencies must be submitted with the application.
    8. Fingerprints: Applicants must have a background check as part of the licensing process.
