Florida Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor License

To become a licensed contractor in Florida for garage door installation, you are required to:

  • Complete and submit the application to the DBPR with all required documentation.
  • Pass the following required exams:
    • Business and Finance Exam: 120 questions, 6.5 hours to complete.
    • Garage Door Trade Exam: 55 questions, 2.5 hours to complete.
  • Demonstrate relevant experience in garage door installation.
  • Provide proof of financial stability as required by the DBPR.
  • Obtain general liability insurance and workers' compensation insurance as mandated by Florida law.
  • Complete a background check, including fingerprinting, to meet state compliance requirements.

The Florida Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor License authorizes the following scope of work:

  • Fabricate, assemble, handle, erect, install, dismantle, adjust, alter, repair, and service all types of garage doors.
  • Install and maintain related hardware and operating devices for garage doors.
  • Perform work associated with residential, commercial, and industrial garage doors.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable building codes and safety standards during installation and maintenance.
  • Specialize in automatic and manual garage door systems.
  • Repair and replace damaged or malfunctioning garage door parts, including tracks, rollers, springs, cables, and openers.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot garage door systems to ensure proper functionality and safety.
  • Coordinate with other contractors or professionals for integrated installations when required.

This license does not include work beyond the scope of garage door systems or related hardware.


Applications for the Florida Business and Finance License must be submitted to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The application process includes proof of financial stability, details of insurance coverage, and electronic fingerprinting, among other requirements.


Florida does not offer direct reciprocity for the Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor License. However, applicants holding a current and active license in another state with equivalent requirements may qualify for licensure by endorsement. Such applicants must meet Florida's standards by passing the Business and Finance exam and the Garage Door Trade exam, regardless of prior licensure. They must also provide documentation verifying their out-of-state license, proof of financial stability, and experience, while meeting Florida’s insurance and background check requirements. All necessary documents must be submitted to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR)


FTo renew your Florida Garage Door Installation Specialty Contractor License, you are required to complete 14 hours of continuing education every two years. This includes at least one hour each in Workplace Safety, Workers' Compensation, Business Practices, Advanced Building Code, and Laws and Rules. If applicable to your license, one hour of Wind Mitigation Methodologies is also required. The remaining hours can focus on general topics relevant to your trade. All courses must be approved by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).


  • The Business and Finance Exam consists of 120 questions related to business and financial management, with a time limit of 6.5 hours.
  • The Garage Door Trade Exam includes 55 questions covering general knowledge of garage door installation, with a time limit of 2.5 hours.
