Florida Swimming Pool Specialty Licenses
In Florida, swimming pool specialty contractors are required to work under a licensed commercial pool/spa, residential pool/spa, or servicing contractor, as they cannot contract directly with the public. If you aspire to become a Florida swimming pool specialty contractor, you must apply to the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Licensing Requirements
To qualify for certification as a swimming pool specialty contractor, you must meet the following criteria:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
- Moral Character: You will need to undergo fingerprinting, a background check, and a credit check.
- Experience: You must have at least four (4) years of relevant experience or a combination of college education and experience.
- Practical Examination: You need to provide a practical examiner grade report showing that you have passed the required practical exam.
- Pre-Licensing Education Requirement: Completion of CILB-approved education in one hour each of workplace safety, business practices, and workers' compensation courses.
Specialty License Types
- Swimming Pool Layout Specialty: Limited to the layout, shaping, steel installation, and rough piping of pools, spas, and hot tub shells.
- Swimming Pool Structural Specialty: Limited to the shaping and shooting of gunite, shotcrete, concrete, or similar product mix used in the construction of swimming pools and spas. This scope of work includes the installation of fiberglass shells and vinyl liners.
- Swimming Pool Excavation Specialty: Limited to the excavation and earthmoving required for the installation of pools, spas, and hot tub shells.
- Swimming Pool Trim Specialty: Limited to the installation of tile and coping for pools, spas, and hot tub shells. Decorative or interactive water displays or areas that use recirculated water, including waterfalls and spray nozzles, are also included in this rule within this scope of work.
- Swimming Pool Decking Specialty: Limited to the construction and installation of concrete flatwork, pavers and bricks, retaining walls, and footings associated with the construction of pools, spas, and hot tub shells.
- Swimming Pool Piping Specialty: Limited to the installation of piping or the installation of circulating, filtering, disinfecting, controlling, or monitoring equipment and devices used in the construction of pools, spas, hot tubs, and decorative or interactive water displays or areas.
- Swimming Pool Finishes Specialty: Limited to the coating or plastering of the interior surfaces of pools, spas, or hot tub shells.
