The current Iowa Residential Electrician Examination contains 50 scored questions. Candidates have 120 minutes to complete the scored portion and must answer at least 70% correctly to pass.
The examination also includes 5 non-scored questions. PSI provides an additional 15 minutes for those non-scored items. The non-scored questions are used for examination-development purposes and do not affect the candidate's final score.

Wiring and Protection and Wiring Methods and Materials are the two largest examination categories at 25% each. Together, these subjects account for half of the scored exam and should receive significant preparation time.

The Iowa Residential Electrician examination is an open book test, but only specifically approved references may be brought into the examination center.

The approved reference may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed before the examination. Permanent tabs are also permitted. PSI defines permanent tabs as tabs that would tear the page if removed.
Temporary removable tabs, including Post-it-style tabs, are not allowed. Candidates may not bring loose or attached additional papers with the approved reference, and the book may not contain handwritten notes. Candidates are also prohibited from writing, highlighting, underlining, or indexing the reference during the examination session.
Ugly's Electrical References is not allowed in the examination center. Candidates should use it during preparation to reinforce electrical calculations and theory, then practice solving similar problems using only the approved NEC Handbook and their own retained knowledge.

Iowa electrical licensing is administered through the Iowa Electrical Examining Board within the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing.
Iowa defines residential electrical work as electrical work in a residence containing no more than four living units within the same building. The residential license also permits electrical work in qualifying accessory structures located on the same lot as the dwelling unit or units.
Those accessory structures must be no greater than 3,000 square feet in floor area, no more than two stories in height, and used incidentally to the residential property.
Iowa provides several qualification pathways for the Residential Electrician license.
One pathway requires 6,000 hours of experience as an apprentice electrician together with passing the Residential Electrician examination. Under this pathway, an applicant may take the examination after completing 5,000 hours of apprentice experience, although the residential license is not issued until the full 6,000 hours have been completed.
A second pathway allows an applicant who has completed at least 4,000 hours of experience working under the direct supervision of a residential master electrician, residential electrician, master electrician, or journeyman electrician to qualify when the applicant has also successfully completed at least one academic year of an electrical trade school approved by the Board and passes the Residential Electrician examination.
A third pathway applies to qualifying licensed unclassified persons. This pathway requires 8,000 hours of verified experience, including at least 2,000 hours of verified residential wiring experience, together with passing the approved Residential Electrician examination.
Iowa also recognizes completion of a registered residential electrician apprenticeship program. Under this pathway, the applicant must pass a supervised written Residential Electrician examination approved by the Board with a score of at least 70 within the applicable licensing timeframe.
Iowa currently uses the 2023 National Electrical Code as its statewide minimum electrical standard. Current Iowa guidance also confirms that PSI is testing electrical candidates on the 2023 NEC.
General Electrical Knowledge accounts for 10% of the examination. Candidates should understand common electrical terms, basic electrical theory, voltage, current, resistance, power, conductor properties, calculations, and general electrical installation principles.
Ugly's Electrical References can be useful for reinforcing formulas during preparation. Practice Ohm's law, voltage drop, conductor calculations, power relationships, and common electrical conversions, then work similar problems without using Ugly's so preparation reflects the actual examination environment.
Wiring and Protection accounts for 25%. Residential candidates should review branch circuits, feeders, services, overcurrent protection, grounding and bonding, conductor sizing, dwelling-unit load calculations, GFCI protection, AFCI protection, service equipment, disconnecting means, and other NEC requirements that protect people and electrical systems.
Grounding and bonding deserve focused study. Candidates should understand grounding electrode systems, grounding electrode conductors, equipment grounding conductors, bonding, service equipment, separately derived systems where applicable, and sizing requirements.
Wiring Methods and Materials also accounts for 25%. Study nonmetallic-sheathed cable, raceways, conductors, boxes, enclosures, fittings, support requirements, protection from physical damage, box fill, conductor fill, and permitted wiring methods.
Residential electrical work frequently involves cable-routing requirements, box sizing, device boxes, conductor protection, drilling and notching considerations, wet and damp locations, exterior wiring, garages, unfinished spaces, and other practical installation conditions.
Equipment for General Use represents 20%. Review receptacles, switches, luminaires, appliances, motors, transformers, heating equipment, air-conditioning equipment, and other commonly installed residential electrical equipment.
Pay attention to equipment disconnecting means, required branch circuits, overcurrent protection, nameplate ratings, conductor sizing, and installation requirements. Residential questions often combine an equipment requirement with branch-circuit or wiring-method rules.
Special Occupancies accounts for 5%. Review the NEC provisions applying to occupancies or locations that require electrical rules beyond ordinary dwelling-unit installations.
Special Equipment represents 5%. Candidates should be familiar with specialized electrical equipment and understand where the NEC contains requirements that differ from standard general-use equipment.
Special Conditions accounts for 5%. Study emergency and standby systems, interconnected sources, energy-storage systems, photovoltaic-related electrical provisions where applicable, and other systems governed by special NEC requirements.
Communication Systems accounts for 5%. Review communications wiring and related low-voltage provisions, particularly where those systems interact with residential buildings and electrical wiring methods.
A productive study strategy is to practice identifying the likely NEC article before opening the book. If a question involves dwelling-unit receptacles, services, grounding, boxes, cables, motors, or communications, determine the likely subject area first and then use the index, table of contents, and tabs to locate the exact requirement.
Because the scored exam allows 120 minutes for 50 questions, candidates have an average of approximately 2.4 minutes per scored question. Efficient navigation can leave more time for calculation questions and code provisions that require careful reading.
