Current ICC KGH format: the Kansas Standard Journeyman Electrician exam contains 80 multiple-choice questions with a four-hour time limit. Kansas law requires covered local licensing jurisdictions to use a minimum 75% passing score. Wiring Methods and Materials is the largest KGH subject at 26%.
The KGH Kansas Standard Journeyman Electrician exam is an International Code Council electrical competency examination used within Kansas' local licensing system. The exam is delivered through Pearson VUE and is recognized by Kansas jurisdictions that accept the KGH for Journeyman certification.
Kansas does not use one single statewide individual Journeyman Electrician license. Cities and counties can issue electrician certificates and licenses under the Kansas statutory licensing framework.
Exam answer: 80 multiple-choice questions, four hours, open book, 75% minimum passing requirement under Kansas law, with the 2017 National Electrical Code and Ugly's Electrical Reference listed for the KGH.
The Journeyman credential should also be separated from an electrical contractor license. Journeyman certification shows trade competency, while local electrical contractor licensing can include a separate contractor business license, qualifying master, insurance and other jurisdiction-specific requirements.

Kansas electrician licensing is primarily handled at the city and county level. The exact application, license name and business requirements can vary depending on where you plan to work.
Journeyman experience: Kansas law requires the issuing jurisdiction to verify at least two years of documented field experience before issuing a Journeyman certificate.
Trade school option: up to one year of the experience requirement may be satisfied through qualifying trade-related schooling consisting of at least 930 program hours.
KGH examination: many jurisdictions recognize the ICC KGH Kansas Standard Journeyman Electrician exam as an approved competency examination.
Contractor licensing: Journeyman certification is not automatically an electrical contractor license. Local electrical contractor credentials may require a qualifying master electrician, business license, insurance and other documentation.
For example, Sedgwick County and Wichita currently recognize the KGH for Journeyman certification and require 75% or better plus qualifying experience.
Each bar is scaled against Wiring Methods and Materials, the largest 26% KGH category.
The current ICC Kansas Contractor/Trades bulletin identifies two references for the KGH examination.
| Reference | Primary Use | Current Listing |
|---|---|---|
| NFPA 70 National Electrical Code | Wiring methods, branch circuits, feeders, services, grounding, equipment, motors and specialty systems | 2017 Edition |
| Ugly's Electrical Reference | Electrical formulas, calculations, tables and quick-reference information | Any edition |

Use the ICC-listed examination reference when preparing for the KGH, then follow the code adopted by the jurisdiction when performing licensed electrical work.
KGH exam-reference reminder: some current 1 Exam Prep study packages teach with the newer 2026 NEC. The current ICC KGH exam itself lists the 2017 NEC. Candidates preparing specifically for KGH should also practice with the exact ICC-listed testing edition.
