How Does Montana Journeyman Electrician Licensing Work?

Montana licenses Journeyman Electricians statewide through the Montana State Electrical Board. Candidates must qualify through an approved apprenticeship, trade-training route, practical-experience route or qualifying electrical-maintenance route before the Board approves them for PSI testing.

The current Journeyman examination is open book and tests National Electrical Code knowledge plus general trade knowledge and theory. Montana currently bases its electrician examinations on the 2020 NEC.
