Current Michigan Journeyman format: the PSI exam contains 80 questions, allows 150 minutes, requires 75% to pass and is open book. The active exam basis is the 2023 NEC with Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8 and applicable state laws.
The Michigan Electrical Journeyman examination is administered by PSI for the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Construction Codes. It tests knowledge of the National Electrical Code, Michigan electrical rules and laws, electrical theory, calculations and practical code application.
The current exam covers grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, wiring methods and installations, boxes and cabinets, services, feeders, motors and motor controls, special occupancies, load calculations, lighting, appliances, box and raceway fill, power-limited circuits and general trade knowledge.
Exam answer: 80 questions, 150 minutes, 75% passing score and open-book testing.
Code answer: the current Michigan and PSI exam basis is the 2023 NEC with 2023 Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8. Michigan is considering updated 2026 NEC-based rules, but those proposed rules do not replace the current exam basis yet.
Contractor distinction: Michigan currently does not require a separate Electrical Contractor examination. The contractor license is a business credential tied to an associated Michigan Master Electrician responsible for code compliance.
This page uses 10 official Michigan and PSI authority sources for exam, licensing, code, reference and contractor information. Commercial exam-prep sources are used only to expand study strategies and topic coverage.
The current PSI bulletin identifies these knowledge areas. PSI does not publish an official question count for every individual subject, so the page does not invent unsupported percentages.

The Michigan Journeyman Electrician license is earned after completing the required supervised field experience and passing the PSI examination. It is also the professional foundation for electricians who later plan to qualify as Master Electricians and participate in a licensed electrical contracting business.
Age requirement: applicants must be at least 20 years old.
Experience requirement: at least 8,000 hours of qualifying supervised electrical experience completed over at least four years.
Apprentice registration: Michigan guidance emphasizes maintaining the required apprentice registration while earning qualifying hours.
Contractor path: Michigan currently does not require a separate Electrical Contractor exam. The contractor business must have an associated Michigan Master Electrician responsible for code compliance.
PSI does not publish official topic-by-topic question counts. These bars represent study-priority groups based on repeated appearance across the official PSI scope and current Michigan exam-prep research, not official exam percentages.
The exam is open book, but Michigan and PSI impose strict rules on editions, tabs, markings, binding and loose materials.
| Reference | Primary Use | Current PSI Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 National Electrical Code | Core NEC questions, calculations, wiring methods, services, grounding, motors and general electrical code | Current exam basis; factory markings/highlights and factory tabs only |
| 2023 Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8 | Michigan amendments and state-specific electrical requirements | Approved reference subject to current printing/binding rules |
| 2016 PA 407 Skilled Trades Regulation Act | Licensing, supervision and trade regulation | Approved state-law reference |
| 1972 PA 230 State Construction Code Act | Code administration, enforcement and state construction law | Approved state-law reference |
| 2026 NEC Study Materials | Forward-looking study, updated code concepts and 1 Exam Prep 2026 coursework | Not the current Michigan exam basis; verify the live bulletin before relying on it for testing |
Build supervised experience, maintain apprentice status, apply through LARA, prepare from the current 2023 NEC exam basis, pass PSI and then continue toward the Master Electrician and Electrical Contractor career path.
Keep the required Michigan apprentice registration active while completing qualifying supervised electrical work.
Document the qualifying practical experience required for Journeyman Electrician eligibility.
Submit the required licensing application and experience documentation before PSI scheduling.
Use the 2023 NEC, Michigan Part 8 rules and applicable state acts under the current PSI material rules.
Focus on wiring methods, grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, services, feeders, calculations, motors, boxes, raceways and Michigan rules.
Complete 80 questions within 150 minutes and earn at least 75 percent.
After Journeyman licensure, continue toward Master Electrician eligibility and the Electrical Contractor business-license pathway.
Open-book strategy: use a diagnostic-first approach. Identify weak NEC chapters, drill those areas, and then practice full 80-question exams. With 150 minutes for 80 questions, you average about 1.88 minutes per question.
Michigan exam reminder: current 1 Exam Prep 2026 products may use the 2026 NEC for study and future-readiness. The active Michigan PSI examination remains based on the 2023 NEC, so always verify the exact test-day reference rules before preparing books.

The Journeyman Electrician license verifies trade-level electrical competency. Michigan currently does not require an Electrical Contractor examination, but electrical contracting businesses must meet state licensing requirements and have an associated Michigan Master Electrician responsible for code compliance.
