Current Massachusetts Master format: Part I contains 90 questions in 240 minutes and Part II Business and Law contains 50 questions in 120 minutes. Each part requires 70% to pass. Both are open book under current PSI and Board reference rules.
The Massachusetts Master Electrician examination is a two-part licensing test administered through PSI for the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians. Part I measures advanced electrical trade and code knowledge. Part II focuses on Business and Law, including Massachusetts licensing, contracts, safety, estimating, finance, taxes, labor, project management and lien law.
Massachusetts Master Electrician preparation requires more than NEC memorization. Candidates need strong code navigation, accurate calculations, knowledge of Massachusetts-specific amendments and laws, and enough business-law knowledge to handle contractor-level responsibilities.
Exam answer: Part I has 90 questions, a four-hour limit and requires 63 correct answers for 70%. Part II has 50 questions, a two-hour limit and requires 35 correct answers for 70%.
2026 code transition: Massachusetts adopted its 2026 Electrical Code based on the 2026 NEC effective April 24, 2026. Board records indicated corresponding exam changes were being coordinated for the 2026 transition, so candidates should verify the active PSI bulletin and permitted references for their scheduled test date.
The current Part I blueprint gives 46 of 90 questions to Wiring Methods and Devices, Services, Grounding and Bonding, and Special Occupancies and Equipment. Those four subjects should receive the largest share of technical exam-prep time.
This page uses 12 authority and official-reference groups for licensing, code, examination, safety and business-law context, with commercial prep sources used only as supporting research. Massachusetts Board and PSI requirements control whenever commercial pages differ.
Match your Massachusetts electrical license prep time to the current 90-question Part I blueprint and 50-question Business and Law Part II blueprint.

The Massachusetts Class A Master Electrician license is the advanced personal electrical license used for higher-level supervision, business responsibility and contractor work. Candidates must meet the state eligibility and education requirements before qualifying for the Master examination.
Journeyman experience: the standard path requires at least one year as the holder of a Massachusetts Journeyman Electrician license while actively engaged in electrical work.
Master education: candidates complete a 150-hour Board-approved Master Electrician education program covering advanced code, calculations, Massachusetts laws, business practices and related master-level material.
Business path: Massachusetts electrical business licensing requires a Massachusetts licensed Master Electrician to serve as the Licensee of Record for the business, subject to Board requirements.
Reciprocity: Massachusetts currently identifies electrician reciprocity with New Hampshire for qualifying personal licenses, not company licenses.
Part I bars are scaled against the 15-question Wiring Methods and Devices category. Part II bars are scaled against the 16-question Massachusetts Licensing category.
The exam is open book, but candidates should use only the references and book conditions allowed by the active PSI bulletin and Massachusetts Board policies.
