Separate Contractor Path

Important North Dakota licensing fact: a Journeyman Electrician license is not the same as electrical contracting authority. North Dakota electrical contracting status is tied to qualifying Master, Class B or Power Limited license categories and the related business, insurance, registration and Board requirements.

How Does North Dakota Journeyman Electrician Licensing Work?

North Dakota electrician licensing is administered statewide by the North Dakota State Electrical Board. A Journeyman Electrician candidate generally needs 8,000 hours of qualifying experience while registered as an apprentice electrician. The experience may not be obtained in less than three years, and journeyman candidates must also satisfy the Board's apprenticeship training requirements.

The North Dakota journeyman examination has both closed-book and open-book portions. The Board currently lists one hour for the closed portion and three and one-half hours for the open portion, for a total exam time of four and one-half hours. The passing grade is 70 percent.

The examination is based on fundamental electricity, North Dakota laws, rules and wiring standards, and the current edition of the National Electrical Code. This means you need two different types of speed: remembering important electrical concepts without a reference and finding NEC requirements efficiently when the exam becomes open book.

Journeyman eligibility: 8,000 hours of qualifying electrical experience, which may not be obtained in less than three years, plus required apprentice training.

Journeyman exam: one-hour closed-book portion + three-and-one-half-hour open-book portion.

Electrical contracting: a journeyman license alone does not create contracting-master authority. The contractor path is separate.

North Dakota Journeyman Electrician Contractor Exam Prep Breakdown

The North Dakota journeyman exam tests more than code-book searching. Candidates should prepare for electrical theory, calculations, North Dakota-specific laws and wiring standards, and NEC-based installation requirements. Because one portion is closed book, you need concepts and formulas that are already familiar before you walk into the room.

The open-book portion rewards organized navigation. Learn how the NEC is structured, practice the index, understand article families, and become comfortable with tables, notes and exceptions. A code book is useful, but it will not magically open itself to the correct article while the exam clock watches you struggle.

How to Study for the North Dakota Journeyman Electrician and Contractor Path

Start with the license you are actually pursuing. The Journeyman Electrician license is an individual trade credential. Electrical contracting requires a different licensing status and business setup, so studying for the journeyman exam is only one part of a longer contractor path.

For journeyman prep: focus on electrical theory, calculations, services, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, grounding and bonding, wiring methods, boxes, raceways, motors, transformers, overcurrent protection, special occupancies and North Dakota rules.

For contractor goals: understand the Master Electrician requirement, contracting-master status, business registration, contractor licensing, liability insurance, E-Cert procedures and NDSEB orientation requirements.

For both: build speed. The closed portion tests what you know without a book, while the open portion tests how efficiently you can use your references.

Electrical Calculations and NEC Navigation Strategy

North Dakota Journeyman Electrician exam prep should combine code knowledge with practical calculations. Electrical math becomes easier when you use a repeatable method: identify what the question gives you, choose the correct formula or NEC table, work carefully through the numbers, and then check whether the result makes sense for the installation.

NEC LOADS GROUND MOTORS NEC navigation • calculations • wiring • contractor prep

Simplified North Dakota electrician exam-prep illustration for NEC navigation, load calculations, grounding and motor circuits.

Practice moving from the subject of the question to the correct NEC article or table. The goal is not to memorize every code sentence. The goal is to know enough about the structure of the NEC that you can find the controlling rule without taking a scenic tour through the entire book.

  • Services and Feeders: service sizing, feeder loads, service equipment and disconnecting means
  • Branch Circuits: conductor sizing, required circuits, receptacle and lighting loads
  • Grounding and Bonding: grounding electrode systems, bonding jumpers and equipment grounding conductors
  • Raceways and Boxes: raceway fill, box fill, support, protection and installation rules
  • Motors and Transformers: conductors, overload protection, short-circuit protection, controllers and disconnects
  • Calculations: Ohm's law, power formulas, conductor ampacity, load calculations, voltage drop concepts and overcurrent protection

North Dakota Journeyman Electrician vs Electrical Contractor Authority

A North Dakota Journeyman Electrician license and North Dakota electrical contracting authority are separate concepts.

A Journeyman Electrician performs electrical work under the licensing and supervision structure established by the North Dakota State Electrical Board. The journeyman credential shows that the electrician has met the experience, training and examination requirements for journeyman-level work.

Electrical contracting requires a different license status. North Dakota identifies contracting-master, contracting-Class-B and contracting-power-limited categories. A contracting master is responsible for following the state's electrical laws and wiring standards and must show proof of required liability insurance.

Businesses pursuing electrical contracting must also complete required business-registration and contractor-license steps, submit the NDSEB electrical-contracting and E-Cert paperwork, provide proof of liability insurance, and participate in the required contractor orientation.

North Dakota Journeyman and Electrical Contractor Comparison

Both paths depend on electrical knowledge, but they serve different licensing purposes.

Path Main Purpose Important Difference
Journeyman Electrician Individual journeyman-level electrical license Requires 8,000 qualifying hours, apprentice training and the journeyman exam
Master Electrician Higher individual electrical license Requires at least one year and 2,000 hours as a licensed journeyman under proper supervision
Contracting Master Qualifies electrical contracting activity Requires contracting status, liability insurance and business-related Board requirements

How Hard Is the North Dakota Journeyman Electrician Exam?

The difficulty comes from switching between electrical knowledge and reference navigation. During the closed-book portion, you cannot rely on the NEC to rescue every forgotten concept. During the open-book portion, having a code book available does not help much if every answer takes eight minutes to find.

Calculations also deserve regular practice. Conductor sizing, load calculations, motors, transformers, branch circuits and overcurrent protection can require several steps. A small arithmetic mistake at the beginning can send the whole problem wandering into the electrical wilderness.

North Dakota also uses score-based waiting periods after unsuccessful attempts. A score from 60 through 69 currently has no waiting period, a score from 50 through 59 requires a three-month wait, and a score below 50 requires a six-month wait. That makes realistic practice useful before exam day.
