A Florida certified Specialty Structure Contractor performs a defined subset of construction involving aluminum, metal, canvas, vinyl, fiberglass screening, doors and windows, hurricane protection devices, and related materials.
The certification is statewide, but it is not a general contractor license and does not authorize unrestricted structural construction. The exact boundaries live in Rule 61G4-15.015, and that rule, not marketing copy, controls what you can contract.

Incidental wood, concrete, and masonry work is limited by Rule 61G4-15.015, and work outside the specialty scope must be performed by an appropriately licensed subcontractor. Electrical and plumbing work are not covered by this certification alone.
The scope includes sunrooms within the rule's limits, but it excludes wood-framed sunroom structures. If a project involves conventional wood framing, review the rule and the alternative classifications before you contract for it.

The Business and Finance exam uses a separate reference set. Open book does not mean easy. With 80 questions in 300 minutes, you have an average of 3 minutes and 45 seconds per trade question, so your reference setup is a direct lever on your score.
Build an index and learn which reference controls each content area before test day. That single habit does more for your score than rereading any one book.
Create a content-to-book map. Use the Florida Building Codes for prescriptive requirements, the aluminum guide for high-wind aluminum systems, Walker's for estimating, OSHA for safety, and the trade manuals for material-specific installation questions. Knowing which book owns a question is half the lookup.
Use permanent, compliant tabs for high-frequency lookups such as wind loads, roof assemblies, fasteners, footings, window requirements, siding clearances, fall protection, concrete finishing, and estimating tables. Chapter tabs alone still leave you searching.
Your index should identify the book, section, and search term. Do not turn it into prohibited notes. Keep all markings consistent with the Candidate Information Booklet, because an index that crosses into note territory can cost you the reference.
Review area, volume, slope, material quantities, waste factors, labor productivity, unit pricing, concrete, and basic plan-scale calculations. Write every step during practice so you can spot unit errors before they cost you points.
Answer quick knowledge and easy lookup questions first, then mark long calculations or uncertain code questions for review. This protects time for the items that need deeper navigation instead of spending it early on one stubborn question.

The Specialty Structure application provides several qualification methods. Common paths include:
DBPR evaluates whether the reported work actually falls within the specialty structure category. Use complete project descriptions that identify the system, materials, project scope, duties, dates, and supervisory responsibility instead of listing only a job title.
A FICO-derived credit score of 660 or higher generally satisfies the credit-score component. Current CILB materials direct applicants below 660 to complete a Board-approved 14-hour financial responsibility course.
Do not assume that a generic $10,000 or $20,000 bond resolves every below-660 application. Follow the instructions on the current Specialty Structure application for your application type.
Initial applicants must complete electronic fingerprinting through an FDLE-approved Livescan provider. Follow DBPR's current sequence and use the correct Originating Agency Identification number.

Before an active license is issued, applicants must document public liability and property damage coverage that meets Board requirements.
For specialty categories classified with the Board's "all other categories," published minimums are commonly $100,000 in public liability and $25,000 in property damage coverage. Certification by endorsement may be possible in limited cases, but DBPR warns that exam-comparison endorsement standards are stringent. This is not a simple reciprocal agreement, so review the current endorsement requirements for your credentials before assuming either way.
