Current Maine Journeyman format: the exam contains 80 multiple-choice questions, has a three-hour time limit, and requires 70% to pass, or 56 correct answers. The exam is closed book, so preparation should focus on recall, plumbing math, diagrams, sizing methods and code concepts.
The Maine Journeyman Plumber examination is part of the state licensing process administered through the Maine Plumbers' Examining Board and Prov. It tests plumbing knowledge across drainage, venting, water supply, backflow protection, fixtures, regulations and practical plumbing systems.
Unlike many contractor exams, the Maine Journeyman Plumber exam is closed book. That changes the study strategy. Candidates need strong recall of plumbing concepts, formulas, sizing methods, regulations and system relationships instead of relying on fast code-book lookup.
Exam answer: 80 questions, three hours, closed book, 70% passing score and 56 correct answers required.
Code distinction: Maine currently uses the 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code with Maine amendments for plumbing installations. The current Prov candidate bulletin still lists the 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code among the sources used to develop the Journeyman examination.
That difference matters. The code currently enforced in the field is not automatically the same edition shown in the examination-development reference list. Candidates should follow the current Maine and Prov exam information when studying specifically for the licensing exam.
This page combines research from 3 primary authority groups and 6 visible secondary research groups. Official Maine and Prov information controls when commercial exam-prep pages show conflicting question counts, passing scores or code information.
Match your Maine plumber exam prep time to the current 80-question Prov content blueprint.

Maine provides more than one pathway toward Journeyman Plumber licensure. Candidates should identify which experience path applies before building their exam and career plan.
Standard trainee pathway: complete two years and at least 4,000 hours of plumbing-installation experience as a licensed trainee plumber under a licensed Master Plumber.
Journeyman-in-Training pathway: qualifying candidates can progress by completing at least 2,000 hours of supervised plumbing experience as a licensed Journeyman-in-Training under a Master Plumber within the applicable four-year period.
Journeyman role: a Maine Journeyman Plumber generally performs plumbing work under the employment and direction of a licensed Master Plumber.
Contractor career path: Maine identifies the Master Plumber license as the level authorized to engage in the business of installing plumbing or plumbing systems.
Journeyman to Master: one common Master pathway requires at least one year and 2,000 hours of experience as a licensed Journeyman Plumber plus the applicable Master examination and licensing requirements.
Each bar is scaled against Drainage, Waste and Sanitary Venting, the largest 18-question category.
The exam is closed book, so these references are important for study and exam development rather than materials you carry into the test room.
| Reference | Primary Use | Current Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2015 Uniform Plumbing Code | Drainage, venting, water supply, fixtures, traps, plumbing systems and code-based exam content | Listed by the current Prov bulletin as an exam-development source |
| Maine Plumbing Laws and Rules | Maine-specific regulations, licensing concepts and plumbing requirements | 2016 reference listed in the current Prov bulletin |
| Maine Plumbing Tables | Pipe sizing, drainage, venting, fixture units and plumbing calculations | Based on the 2015 UPC; permitted table printout is supplied by the proctor |
| Plumbing Basics for Contractors | General plumbing knowledge, systems, calculations and contractor-oriented trade concepts | 3rd Edition listed in the current Prov bulletin |
| 2021 Uniform Plumbing Code with Maine Amendments | Current plumbing installation requirements in Maine | Current Maine field code, separate from the older edition still listed in the exam bulletin |
Choose the correct experience pathway, prepare for the closed-book exam, complete supervised plumbing experience and move toward Journeyman licensure.
Determine whether you are following the licensed trainee pathway or the Journeyman-in-Training pathway.
Review the current Plumbers' Examining Board requirements and complete the application or exam-approval steps that apply to you.
Prioritize Drainage, Waste and Sanitary Venting, Water Supply, Backflow Prevention, Water Heaters, General Knowledge and regulations.
Build recall of formulas, pipe-sizing methods, plumbing rules, fixture requirements, venting concepts and common system relationships.
Work drainage sizing, slope, fixture-unit calculations, water supply, vent sizing and plumbing-system diagram questions.
Complete the 80-question closed-book examination within three hours and earn at least 70%, or 56 correct answers.
Submit the required supervised-experience documentation for Journeyman licensure, then continue building experience if your long-term goal is Master Plumber or plumbing business ownership.
Closed-book strategy: learn the concept first, then practice applying it without reaching for a reference every time. Use code books and study guides while training, but gradually remove them during practice tests so exam day does not feel like someone suddenly took away your toolbox.
Maine exam reminder: the general Journeyman Plumber study guide can support plumbing math, isometric practice and broad trade review, but Maine candidates should also study the specific closed-book Prov blueprint, Maine regulations and current examination-development references.
