Important Utah licensing fact: a Utah Journeyman Plumber license is an individual trade credential. It is not the same as the P200 General Plumbing Contractor business classification. A Utah plumbing contractor must satisfy separate contractor requirements, including the applicable Master Plumber qualifier and Utah contractor Business and Law requirements.
The Utah Journeyman Plumber license is an individual professional plumbing credential issued through Utah DOPL. It demonstrates that the license holder has completed the required training, experience, written examination, practical examination, and state licensing process.
Journeyman plumbers work with water-distribution systems, drainage, waste, vent systems, fixtures, water heaters, fuel-gas systems, piping, valves, and related plumbing installations.
Utah offers both a Journeyman Plumber license and a more limited Residential Journeyman Plumber license. The full Journeyman credential is the broader plumbing classification.

The Utah Plumber Written Exam contains 100 questions spread across thirteen published subject areas.
The largest category is Drain, Waste, and Vent with 20 questions. Water Supply follows with 15 questions, and Indirect and Special Waste contains 10 questions.
Plumbing Math and Plumbing Safety each contribute 9 questions, while Pipe and Fittings contains 7.
Fuel Gas and Plumbing Fixtures each contain 6 questions. Hydronics and Water Heaters each contain 5.
Plumbing Drawing and Structural Penetration and Insulation each contain 3 questions, while Basic Valves contains 2.
Then there is the practical. Books will not solder copper for you. For that portion, Utah wants to see whether your plumbing knowledge still works after somebody hands you pipe, fittings, a tape measure, and a clock.
Prepare for both reference navigation and real trade knowledge. The written test is open book, but four hours for 100 questions still gives you only about 2.4 minutes per question.
DWV: study drainage sizing, slope, cleanouts, traps, venting, building drains, building sewers, and approved fittings.
Water Supply: review water service, distribution, pipe sizing, pressure, valves, cross-connection protection, and fixture demand.
Indirect and Special Waste: practice air gaps, air breaks, indirect receptors, interceptors, separators, and special drainage connections.
Plumbing Math: practice measurements, grade, offsets, areas, volumes, conversions, and pipe-trade calculations.
Safety: review excavation, fall hazards, ladders, scaffolding, personal protective equipment, tools, and OSHA construction requirements.
Practical Skills: practice copper and PVC measurement, cutting, preparation, assembly, soldering, solvent cement, and rolling offsets.
The 2026 Utah Journeyman Plumber Complete Books, Tabs & Course Package combines code materials, tabs, study content, practice questions, online instruction, and plumbing math support.
The Utah exam checks whether you can understand a plumbing system, find the rule, perform the math, and complete actual pipe work. That is a pretty good collection of ways for a pipe to disagree with you.
Utah Journeyman Plumber preparation for plumbing systems, reference navigation, calculations, and hands-on assembly.
Move from apprentice plumbing through education, experience, Prov testing, hands-on practical work, and final DOPL licensing.
Work under the supervision required by Utah law and make sure your plumbing experience is properly documented.
Complete the approved apprenticeship education pathway or build the experience required for Utah's experience-only route.
For the education path, DOPL currently lists 7 semesters or competency equivalence plus 6,000 apprentice plumbing hours for Journeyman examination eligibility.
First-time 2026 candidates must attach the required Verification of Plumber Experience form during exam registration.
Complete 100 open-book questions within four hours and earn at least 70 percent.
Complete the copper and plastic projects within the 2.5-hour practical period.
The education route requires the completed apprenticeship program and 8,000 hours for final Journeyman licensure. The alternative route requires 16,000 hours.
Submit the final DOPL application after required examinations, education, and experience requirements have been completed.
The current written examination contains 100 questions, so the published question counts also show each topic's approximate percentage of the written test.
Biggest study target: DWV, Water Supply, and Indirect & Special Waste combine for 45 of the 100 written questions. Nearly half the exam lives in those three buckets.
Utah's written test is open book. Become familiar with the approved references before exam day, and verify the current Prov bulletin before purchasing or preparing books.

A Utah Journeyman Plumber has the qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to engage in the plumbing trade within the scope established by Utah law and rule.
Journeyman-level work can include water-distribution systems, drainage, waste, venting, fixtures, water heaters, fuel-gas piping, valves, piping materials, repair, installation, and other plumbing systems.
The Journeyman credential is broader than the Residential Journeyman Plumber license. It also provides an important path toward Utah Master Plumber qualification.
Contractor distinction: a Journeyman Plumber license does not automatically authorize the license holder to operate as a Utah P200 General Plumbing Contractor. Utah plumbing contractors have separate business licensing requirements and require the applicable Master Plumber qualifier.
Utah separates apprentice, journeyman, master, residential, and contractor classifications.
| Credential | Main Purpose | Typical Path | Important Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice Plumber | Build supervised plumbing experience | Register and work under licensed supervision | Entry point for accumulating qualifying hours |
| Residential Journeyman Plumber | Residential plumbing work within the applicable Utah scope | Residential apprenticeship education/experience or alternate experience route | More limited scope than the full Journeyman Plumber credential |
| Journeyman Plumber | Full journeyman-level plumbing trade work | 576 education hours + 8,000 experience hours, or 16,000-hour alternative, plus exams | Requires Utah written and practical exams |
| Master Plumber | Advanced plumbing supervision and qualification | Qualifying Journeyman supervisory experience plus Utah Master Law and Rule examination | Can serve as the qualifying Master for applicable plumbing contractor licensing |
| P200 General Plumbing Contractor | Operate a Utah general plumbing contracting business | Separate contractor application, Business and Law exam, Master Plumber qualifier, insurance, and other requirements | Business contractor classification rather than the individual Journeyman license |
Planning to become a plumbing contractor? Utah lists P200 General Plumbing Contractor as a separate contractor classification. The contractor pathway requires a Master-level qualifier and the applicable Utah Business and Law examination.
Build code navigation, plumbing-system knowledge, math speed, safety awareness, and practical pipe skills together.
Utah's Journeyman plumbing process is demanding because it tests both written plumbing knowledge and hands-on pipe assembly.
The written exam gives you 240 minutes for 100 questions. That averages about 2.4 minutes per question.
Because the test is open book, you need to know which reference to use and where information is located. Spending five minutes searching the wrong book is a fast way to donate time to the exam clock.
The practical adds another challenge. You must bring the required tools and materials, measure accurately, prepare pipe correctly, assemble copper and PVC work, and handle a rolling offset on one of the projects.
Strong candidates combine code knowledge, reference navigation, math, field experience, and repeated hands-on practice.
Practical warning: current Prov instructions place responsibility on the candidate to bring the required tools, consumables, safety equipment, and project materials. Review the current candidate bulletin before leaving for the test center.
