Open-book testing still requires efficient preparation. With 80 questions and 150 minutes, candidates have less than two minutes on average for each question. Spending several minutes searching randomly for a single code requirement can make it difficult to complete the examination.

An applicant must also have completed 8,000 hours and four years as an electrical apprentice. The qualifying work must involve electrical construction or maintenance of buildings, electrical wiring, or electrical equipment and must be performed under qualifying supervision.
Michigan requires electrical apprentices to participate in an approved apprenticeship training program that includes related technical instruction. Apprentices must maintain their registration and continue required coursework while accumulating qualifying work experience.
Michigan may provide experience credit for certain recognized training or educational programs. Applicants relying on education or training toward qualification must follow the state's applicable documentation and approval requirements.
