Exam Details

The Oklahoma HVACR Contractor Limited examination tests contractor-level knowledge of the installation, maintenance, repair, fabrication, alteration, and extension of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems, including ductwork within a complete system subject to the Limited classification.

The current technical examination contains 80 scored questions and allows 210 minutes. Candidates must earn at least 70%, or 56 correct answers.

Electrical Knowledge and Controls contains 15 questions. Candidates should review electrical theory, motors, DC circuits, AC circuits, and controls as they relate to HVAC/R equipment.

Natural Gas contains 12 questions. Topics include piping valves, connectors, accessories, hangers and supports, sizing, materials, and testing.

Air Distribution Systems contains 15 questions. Subjects include duct definitions, sizing and design, assembly and installation, supports, materials, insulation, fire and smoke control, hoods and exhaust systems, testing and balancing, ventilation requirements, plans, and symbols.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems is the largest category with 20 questions. Preparation should include refrigeration theory, refrigerants, equipment sizing and design, components, piping, installation, system operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

State Requirements

The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board regulates mechanical licensing, including the HVAC/R Limited Contractor classification.

An HVAC/R Limited license covers qualifying cooling products, systems, and equipment, including process piping, with a cooling capacity of no more than 25 tons.

The classification also covers heating equipment and related process piping with a heat input of no more than 500,000 Btu/h per appliance. Sheet metal, natural gas piping, and refrigeration are included within the Limited scope.

Work exceeding the Limited capacity restrictions requires the appropriate HVAC/R Unlimited classification.

Oklahoma Mechanical Contractor applicants must satisfy the applicable journeyman-level licensing qualifications plus the additional contractor-level experience requirements established by the state.
