A Washington master electrician combines two kinds of authority. The master may work with the tools of the trade as an installer within the specialty and, when properly assigned, may also act as the administrator for an electrical contractor. That means the master-level path brings together technical installation knowledge, Washington electrical law, contractor compliance, permits, inspections, supervision, and specialty-scope responsibility.

Start with the Washington Door, Gate & Similar Systems Master Electrician collection from 1ExamPrep. This guide explains the two-year eligibility rule, Specialty 10 scope, the current 34-question NEC/Theory section, the 20-question Washington Codes section, the 2020 NEC, RCW 19.28, WAC 296-46B, open-book rules, current fees, renewal, continuing education, contractor assignment, and a practical study plan.

Who Can Qualify for the Specialty 10 Master Exam?

Washington currently requires a specialty master electrician candidate to have been certified by Labor & Industries in the applicable electrical specialty for at least two years.

For this credential, that means holding the Washington Door, Gate, and Similar Systems specialty electrician certificate before applying for the matching specialty master examination.

2 Years

Certified Specialty Experience

You must have held the matching Washington specialty electrician certificate for at least two years.

Specialty 10

Matching Classification

The master certificate follows the same Door, Gate, and Similar Systems specialty classification.

L&I Approval

Before PSI

Labor & Industries verifies master-exam eligibility before the candidate schedules with PSI.

No Out-of-State Credit

Master Qualification

Washington rules do not allow out-of-state credit toward qualifying for the master electrician examination.

The Master Certificate Replaces the Matching Electrician Certificate

When Washington issues the master electrician certificate, it replaces the electrician certificate held for that same certification category. You do not carry both the specialty electrician and specialty master electrician certificate for the same Specialty 10 classification.

This is an upgrade within the same specialty, not a second parallel card.

Important: a Specialty 10 Master Electrician remains limited to Specialty 10 scope. Master status adds master-level responsibility, but it does not convert a specialty certificate into a general journey-level 01 certificate.

What Can a Washington Master Electrician Do?

A certified Washington master electrician may work with the tools of the trade as an installer within the certificate's scope. A master may also act as the designated administrator/master electrician for an electrical contractor when properly assigned.

That assigned role carries responsibility for helping ensure the electrical contractor follows Washington electrical laws and rules.

A Specialty 10 master can therefore combine:

  • Hands-on installation within the Door, Gate, and Similar Systems scope
  • Supervision of properly registered electrical trainees within applicable rules
  • Code and installation compliance
  • Washington-law and rule compliance
  • Permit and inspection awareness
  • Contractor administrator/master responsibilities when assigned

What Does Specialty 10 Cover?

Washington defines Specialty 10 as installation, service, maintenance, repair, or replacement of electrical operator wiring and equipment for door, gate, and similar systems.

Covered systems include electric gates, doors, windows, awnings, movable partitions, curtains, and similar powered systems.

Covered components can include:

  • Gate and door operators
  • Control push buttons
  • Key switches and keypads
  • Pull cords
  • Air and electric treadle devices
  • Air and electric sensing edges
  • Coil cords and take-up reels
  • Clocks and timers
  • Photoelectric cells
  • Loop detectors
  • Motion detectors
  • Remote radios, receivers, and antennas
  • Lock-out switches
  • Stand-alone release devices with smoke detection
  • Strobe lights and annunciators
  • Control panels
  • Wiring and conductor terminations

Class 2 Low-Voltage Operator Systems Are Included

Specialty 10 includes low-voltage NEC Class 2 operator systems where the door, gate, or similar operator system is not connected to other systems.

A master electrician should know that system boundary well. The question is not only whether the circuit is low voltage. The question is whether the work still belongs to the covered operator system and remains inside the specialty classification.

Know the 600-Volt and 20-Amp Branch-Circuit Limits

Specialty 10 includes certain branch circuits that originate in a listed door, gate, or similar operator control panel and supply only covered operator-system components.

  • The circuit cannot exceed 600 volts
  • The circuit cannot exceed 20 amperes
  • The supplied component must be within sight of the listed operator control panel
  • The branch circuit must supply only covered operator-system components

A master electrician should be able to recognize these limits quickly because both the exam and real contractor compliance can turn on one small number.

Line-Voltage Reconnection Is Limited to Six Feet

Specialty 10 permits limited reconnection of line-voltage power to a listed operator control panel when the existing branch-circuit or feeder characteristics are not modified.

  • The circuit or feeder cannot exceed 600 volts
  • The circuit or feeder cannot exceed 20 amperes
  • The conductor or conduit from the disconnecting means or junction box cannot exceed six feet

This is reconnection authority, not permission to redesign or replace the building's upstream electrical distribution.

What Is Outside the Specialty?

Specialty 10 does not authorize installation, repair, or replacement of the upstream line-voltage branch-circuit conductors, services, feeders, panelboards, or disconnect switches that supply the listed operator control panel.

The specialty also excludes work governed by NEC Articles 500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 510, 511, 513, 514, 515, and 516.

Master status does not erase specialty limits. The best master on the job still has to know when another certificate or contractor classification is required.

The master blueprint is slightly broader than the Administrator or Electrician version of Specialty 10. Master candidates receive more questions in several areas, including General Requirements, Wiring Methods, Special Conditions, and General Trade Knowledge and Theory.

The Exam Is Open Book and Currently Uses the 2020 NEC

PSI's current Washington electrical bulletin says all electrical examinations are open book. Code and law questions are based on the current version of Chapter 19.28 RCW, current Chapter 296-46B WAC, and the 2020 National Electrical Code.

Candidates may bring qualifying original copyrighted references and a silent, nonprinting, nonprogrammable calculator.

Printed Washington RCW/WAC material downloaded from the internet is acceptable when prepared in the allowed binder format. Permanent index tabs, highlighting, and underlining are allowed in copyrighted references before the exam. Post-It notes, sticky notes, removable tabs, and writing in references during the exam are not allowed.

The Three Core References

A strong Specialty 10 Master study set starts with:

  • 2020 National Electrical Code
  • Chapter 19.28 RCW
  • Chapter 296-46B WAC

The Washington General Master Electrician Book Package is broader than Specialty 10, but it contains these same three core Washington master-level references. Specialty candidates should narrow that material to the exact Door, Gate, and Similar Systems scope and the Specialty 10 PSI outline.

Wiring Methods Are the Largest Named NEC Category

The current master blueprint assigns about six questions to NEC 300-398 Wiring Methods. That makes wiring methods the largest specifically named NEC category for Specialty 10 Master.

  • Raceways
  • Cables
  • Boxes and fittings
  • Conductor installation
  • Securing and support
  • Wet and damp locations
  • Protection from physical damage
  • Equipment connections

Powered doors and gates often sit outdoors, in garages, warehouses, vehicle areas, and other locations where wiring methods can take a beating. The code notices when the forklift does.

Overcurrent Protection Is About Four Questions

NEC 240 contributes about four questions to the master NEC/Theory section. Review conductor protection, overcurrent-device ratings, branch-circuit protection, motor-related protection, and operator equipment protection.

Also keep the specialty boundary separate from the technical rule. You may understand how the upstream breaker should be sized and still be outside Specialty 10 authority to replace that branch-circuit equipment.

Grounding and Bonding Are About Four Questions

NEC 250 receives another four questions in the published master outline. Study equipment-grounding conductors, bonding paths, grounding connections, fault-current paths, and the relationship between grounding, bonding, and overcurrent protection.

Operator systems can combine motors, metallic gates, outdoor cabinets, raceways, sensors, and line-voltage equipment. Grounding and bonding deserve master-level attention.

Motors and Transformers Are About Four Questions

NEC 430-450 contributes about four questions. Door and gate systems commonly use operator motors, control transformers, power supplies, overload protection, relays, and control circuits.

  • Motor ratings
  • Motor protection
  • Disconnecting concepts
  • Control transformers
  • Operator control circuits
  • Equipment nameplates
  • Basic motor calculations

General Trade Knowledge and Theory Are About Six Questions

General Trade Knowledge and Theory contributes about six questions, making it one of the largest individual master-level areas.

  • Voltage
  • Current
  • Resistance
  • Power
  • Ohm's law
  • Series and parallel relationships
  • Basic AC theory
  • Motor and control concepts
  • Electrical math
  • Equipment ratings

Open book is great, but the NEC still refuses to do your arithmetic for you.

The 20-Question Washington Codes Section Is a Master-Level Difference

Specialty 10 Master candidates receive about 20 Washington laws-and-rules questions, compared with 17 on the Administrator and Electrician versions of the current Specialty 10 exam.

Study:

  • Chapter 19.28 RCW
  • Chapter 296-46B WAC
  • Specialty 10 scope
  • Master electrician qualification
  • Electrical contractor licensing
  • Assignment of a master electrician or administrator
  • Electrician and trainee certification
  • Trainee supervision
  • Permits and inspections
  • Examination rules
  • Renewal and continuing education
  • Enforcement responsibilities

A master electrician is expected to understand the compliance side of the business, not just the installation.

There Is No Major Load Calculations Section

General and some other Washington master examinations include a separate Major Load Calculations section. The current Specialty 10 Master Electrician outline does not.

That does not mean calculations disappear. General Trade Knowledge and Theory can still include electrical math and theory computation. It simply means there is no separate two-hour major-load section for this specialty.

Apply Through Labor & Industries Before Scheduling With PSI

Master candidates do not schedule directly the way administrator candidates do. First apply to Washington Labor & Industries for master examination eligibility.

Labor & Industries reviews the application to verify that the candidate has held the matching specialty electrician certificate for the required time. After approval, the candidate receives instructions and an Exam Unique ID for PSI scheduling.

Washington rules also state that out-of-state credit cannot be applied toward qualifying for a master electrician certificate examination.

Current PSI Scheduling and Retest Rules

The current PSI bulletin gives approved electrician and master candidates one year from the approval date to pass all required examination sections.

After a failed attempt, PSI currently requires a 14-day wait before retesting. After a third failed attempt, later attempts require a three-month wait from the most recent failure.

The required sections for a certificate category are scheduled for the same examination day.

Current Exam and Master Application Fees

PSI's current time-based schedule lists $65 for a three-hour examination. Specialty 10 Master currently consists of two hours of NEC/Theory plus one hour of Washington Codes.

Washington's current fee schedule lists the Master Electrician exam application, original certificate, and processing fee at $204.60. The fee schedule states that $44.20 of that application fee is nonrefundable after submission.

Fees can change, so check the current PSI scheduling amount and current WAC 296-46B-909 before payment.

Using the Master Certificate as a Contractor Administrator

A master electrician can be assigned as the designated master electrician/administrator for an electrical contractor that performs work within the master's permitted scope.

Washington says the assigned master or administrator must be a member of the firm who performs the required duties or a full-time supervisory employee meeting the state's assignment requirements.

The current fee for assignment or unassignment of a master electrician/administrator designation is $53.00.

Labor & Industries also instructs master electricians to notify the Department within 10 days of a change in assignment status.

Current Renewal and Continuing Education

Washington master electrician certificates renew every three years and expire on the certificate holder's birthdate.

Current renewal requires 24 hours of approved continuing education:

  • At least 8 hours of code update
  • At least 4 hours of RCW/WAC review
  • 12 additional hours of approved continuing education

The current master electrician renewal fee is $175.70 online or $202.20 by mail, fax, or in person. If the certificate is more than 90 days past expiration, Washington requires reapplication and another master electrical examination to reinstate it.

A Practical Specialty 10 Master Study Plan

  1. Start with Specialty 10 scope. Learn every major permission and exclusion in WAC 296-46B-920.
  2. Study NEC 300-398 wiring methods. This is the largest named NEC category at about six questions.
  3. Review NEC 240 overcurrent protection.
  4. Review NEC 250 grounding and bonding.
  5. Study motors, controls, and transformers.
  6. Practice electrical theory and calculations. The master outline gives about six questions to trade knowledge and theory.
  7. Study RCW 19.28 and WAC 296-46B separately. The master exam has about 20 Washington Codes questions.
  8. Practice contractor-assignment and master-responsibility questions.
  9. Take 34-question NEC/Theory practice sections in two hours.
  10. Take 20-question Washington Codes practice sections in one hour.

Study Like an Installer and an Administrator

The master exam sits between field installation and contractor responsibility. Study a gate or door operator system as an electrician first. Trace incoming power, the listed operator panel, controls, transformer, sensors, motor, signaling devices, grounding, bonding, raceways, and conductor terminations.

Then study the same project as the master responsible for compliance. Is the work inside Specialty 10? Does a different contractor classification need to be involved? Are the workers properly certified? Are permits and inspections handled correctly? Is the installation compliant with both the NEC and Washington rules?

Review the Washington Door, Gate & Similar Systems Master Electrician collection for specialty-focused preparation.

For a broader Washington master-level reference package containing the 2020 NEC, RCW Chapter 19.28, and WAC Chapter 296-46B, review the Washington General Master Electrician Book Package. Use the Specialty 10 outline and scope rules to focus that broader reference set.

Conclusion

The Washington Door, Gate, and Similar Systems Master Electrician certificate is the master-level credential for electrical specialty 10. It is intended for experienced Washington specialty electricians who are ready to combine field installation authority with master-level responsibility for code, Washington electrical law, supervision, and contractor compliance.

The first eligibility rule is simple but important. Washington currently requires a specialty master electrician candidate to have been certified by Labor & Industries in the matching specialty for at least two years. For Specialty 10, that means holding the Door, Gate, and Similar Systems electrician certificate for the required period before applying for the master exam.

Washington also states that out-of-state credit may not be used toward qualifying for a master electrician certificate examination. Labor & Industries verifies eligibility before the candidate schedules with PSI.

Once issued, the master certificate replaces the electrician certificate for that same certification category. The master may continue working with the tools of the trade within Specialty 10 and may also act as the assigned master electrician/administrator for an electrical contractor when the assignment and contractor scope meet Washington requirements.

Specialty 10 remains a limited classification even at the master level. It covers electrical operator systems used with powered doors, gates, windows, awnings, movable partitions, curtains, and similar equipment. The scope includes motors, control panels, buttons, switches, keypads, sensing edges, photoelectric sensors, loop detectors, motion detectors, timers, radio controls, strobe devices, annunciators, wiring, and conductor terminations.

Several scope numbers deserve to be memorized. Certain branch circuits originating in the listed operator panel are limited to 600 volts and 20 amperes and must supply only covered system components within sight of the panel. Limited line-voltage reconnection to a listed operator panel is also limited to 600 volts and 20 amperes, and the conductor or conduit from the disconnect or junction box cannot exceed six feet.

The specialty does not authorize upstream services, feeders, panelboards, disconnects, or general line-voltage branch-circuit work supplying the panel. Master status does not change that boundary. Knowing when another classification is required is part of being a good master.

The current PSI master examination has two sections. NEC and Theory contains about 34 scored questions and allows two hours. Washington Codes contains about 20 scored questions and allows one hour. The published total is 54 scored questions over three section-hours. Unlike the General Master and some other master classifications, Specialty 10 has no separate Major Load Calculations section.

PSI currently requires 70 percent to pass and identifies all Washington electrical examinations as open book. The current code and law sources are the 2020 National Electrical Code, Chapter 19.28 RCW, and Chapter 296-46B WAC.

Wiring Methods is the largest named NEC category at about six questions. Overcurrent Protection and Grounding & Bonding each contribute about four. Motors, HVAC, Generators & Transformers contribute about four. General Trade Knowledge & Theory contributes about six.

The master-level Washington Codes section is larger than the matching Administrator or Electrician section. Study contractor licensing, master assignment, specialty scope, permits, inspections, electrician and trainee certification, supervision, enforcement, exam rules, renewal, and continuing education.

Open-book preparation should focus on navigation, not just possession of books. Prepare the 2020 NEC with permitted permanent tabs and highlighting. Organize current RCW 19.28 and WAC 296-46B in an allowed binder. Practice deciding whether a question belongs in the NEC, RCW, or WAC before searching.

PSI's current schedule lists $65 for a three-hour exam. Washington's current fee schedule lists $204.60 for the master electrician exam application, original certificate, and processing fee. When a master is assigned or unassigned from a contractor, the current assignment fee is $53.

The certificate renews every three years on the holder's birthdate. Current renewal requires 24 hours of approved continuing education, including at least 8 hours of code update and 4 hours of RCW/WAC review. Current master renewal is $175.70 online or $202.20 by mail, fax, or in person.

Strong Specialty 10 Master preparation should feel like doing two jobs at once. Think like the installer who understands motors, controls, wiring methods, grounding, bonding, protection, and theory. Then think like the assigned master who understands scope, licensing, permits, inspections, worker certification, and contractor responsibility. That combination is what separates master-level preparation from simply repeating the specialty electrician exam.

Plain-Language Summary

Washington's Door, Gate, and Similar Systems Master Electrician is the master-level certificate for electrical specialty 10.

To qualify for the master exam, you must already hold the matching Washington specialty electrician certificate. Labor & Industries currently requires at least two years as a certified electrician in that specialty.

Washington also says out-of-state credit cannot be used to qualify for a master electrician exam. You apply to Labor & Industries first. L&I checks your eligibility and then gives you the information needed to schedule with PSI.

When the master certificate is issued, it replaces the electrician certificate you held for the same Specialty 10 category.

The master certificate lets you continue performing hands-on electrical installation work within the Door, Gate, and Similar Systems specialty. A master can also act as the assigned administrator for an electrical contractor when Washington's assignment rules are met.

Specialty 10 covers electrical operator systems for gates, doors, windows, awnings, movable partitions, curtains, and similar equipment. It can include motors, control panels, keypads, push buttons, sensing edges, photoelectric devices, loop detectors, motion detectors, radio controls, timers, strobe lights, annunciators, low-voltage controls, wiring, and conductor terminations.

The scope contains important limits. Certain circuits from the listed operator panel cannot exceed 600 volts or 20 amperes, and the supplied system component must be within sight of the panel.

Limited line-voltage reconnection is also restricted to 600 volts and 20 amperes. The conductor or conduit from the disconnect or junction box cannot be longer than six feet.

Specialty 10 does not allow general upstream electrical work. It does not authorize installing or replacing services, feeders, panelboards, disconnects, or the line-voltage branch-circuit conductors supplying the operator panel.

The current master exam has two sections. NEC and Theory has about 34 questions and gives you two hours. Washington Codes has about 20 questions and gives you one hour. That is about 54 scored questions across three hours.

There is no separate Major Load Calculations section for Specialty 10 Master. You can still see electrical math and theory questions inside the NEC/Theory section.

The exam is open book and currently requires a 70 percent passing score. PSI says the code questions use the 2020 National Electrical Code, current RCW 19.28, and current WAC 296-46B.

The biggest NEC study areas are Wiring Methods, Overcurrent Protection, Grounding & Bonding, Motors and Transformers, and General Trade Knowledge & Theory. The Washington Codes section is also large at 20 questions, so study licensing and compliance carefully.

The current PSI schedule lists $65 for a three-hour exam. Washington's current fee schedule lists $204.60 for the master electrician exam application, original certificate, and processing fee.

Master electrician certificates renew every three years on your birthdate. Current renewal requires 24 hours of approved continuing education, including 8 hours of code update and 4 hours of RCW/WAC review.

Use the Washington Door, Gate & Similar Systems Master Electrician collection from 1ExamPrep to organize your preparation around Specialty 10 scope, the 2020 NEC, Washington electrical law, Washington administrative rules, electrical theory, and open-book navigation.
