About the Tutors

Thomas Hicken, Plumbing Instructor

Thomas T. Hicken is a master plumber and plumbing contractor living in Cache Valley, Utah. He has been a plumbing contractor since 2010 and successfully ran a service and repair business for over ten years. In his 20 years of plumbing experience, he has completed numerous commercial and industrial projects, including residential plumbing and service plumbing. His view and understanding of the plumbing trade are comprehensive. In addition to his plumbing work and his instructor position at 1 Exam Prep, Thomas also works for Utah State University Eastern as a plumbing instructor. Prior to this position, he taught plumbing apprentices at Bridgerland Technical College beginning in 2008, preparing them to take and pass their journeyman test. Thomas brings his deep industry knowledge and passion for teaching to every class, empowering the next generation of plumbers to build successful careers.

Jeff Shanley, Plumbing Instructor

Jeff Shanley is a South Florida native who began technical training at Miami Dade College in 1980 and built a four-decade career as a mechanical contractor specializing in design-build delivery for commercial projects in Florida and abroad. His international portfolio includes U.S. General Services Administration assignments in coordination with the U.S. Department of State on hospitals, embassies, interest sections, and power plants across Cuba, Western Europe, and South America. After concluding GSA work in 2018 and stepping back from active contracting in 2019, he shifted to inspections, instruction, and mentoring, guiding dozens of emerging tradespeople through training and licensure. At 1 Exam Prep he is a private tutor across multiple trades, including HVAC/mechanical, air conditioning, and plumbing, and he will serve as the lead instructor for the forthcoming 120-hour Florida Home Inspector pre-licensure course. .
