Exam Details

The current Iowa Journeyman Electrician Examination contains 80 scored questions. Candidates receive 180 minutes for the scored portion and must achieve at least 70% correct to pass.

Open Book Test

The Iowa Journeyman Electrician examination is an open book test using approved reference material.

PSI currently permits candidates to bring either the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition or the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code Handbook, 2023. This rental package includes the 2023 NEC Handbook.

The approved reference may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed before the examination. Permanent tabs are permitted. PSI defines permanent tabs as tabs that would tear the page if removed.

Temporary removable tabs, such as Post-it-style tabs or other tabs that can be removed without tearing the page, are not allowed. Candidates may not bring additional loose or attached papers with the approved reference.

PSI also prohibits writing in the approved reference before or during the examination. Highlighting, underlining, or indexing must be completed before the examination session begins.

Ugly's Electrical References is not permitted inside the examination center. It is included in this package as a study resource for electrical formulas, calculations, conductor information, grounding, voltage drop, motors, transformers, and other practical electrical topics.

Licensing Steps

Iowa electrical licensing is overseen by the Iowa Electrical Examining Board within the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing.

1. Meet an approved Journeyman examination qualification pathway. Iowa provides pathways involving completion of qualifying apprenticeship training, approved post-secondary electrical training with required on-the-job experience, and certain documented historical experience.

State Requirements

Iowa defines a Journeyman Electrician as a person with the qualifications necessary to wire for or install electrical wiring and equipment.

For the standard Class A Journeyman pathway, Iowa requires successful completion of an apprenticeship training program registered with the appropriate apprenticeship authority. Iowa also recognizes approved post-secondary electrical programs that provide another route toward Journeyman eligibility when combined with the required on-the-job training.

Under the approved post-secondary pathway, the Electrical Examining Board requires a total of 8,000 hours consisting of approved electrical education and documented on-the-job training. The current program structure includes 2,000 hours of approved post-secondary electrical instruction and 6,000 hours of qualifying on-the-job training.

Iowa's current testing sponsorship requirements also recognize certain applicants with documented historical journeyman-level electrical experience under the specific conditions established by the Board.
