Exam Details

The Oklahoma HVACR Journeyman Limited examination tests knowledge of installing, maintaining, repairing, fabricating, altering, and extending air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems, including ductwork, within the Limited classification. The current test contains 60 scored questions and provides three hours for completion. 

The Journeyman Limited examination includes 15 Electrical Knowledge and Controls questions, nine Natural Gas questions, 10 Air Distribution Systems questions, 13 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems questions, 10 Heating Systems questions, and three Safety questions. 

The Oklahoma HVACR Contractor Limited examination expands the technical coverage to 80 scored questions. Its current distribution includes 15 Electrical Knowledge and Controls questions, 12 Natural Gas questions, 15 Air Distribution Systems questions, 20 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems questions, 15 Heating Systems questions, and three Safety questions. 

Electrical Knowledge and Controls includes general electrical theory, motors, DC circuits, AC circuits, and controls. Candidates should understand how electrical components interact with HVAC/R equipment and how controls affect system operation and troubleshooting.

Natural Gas covers valves, connectors, accessories, hangers and supports, sizing, materials, testing, and related installation concepts. The International Fuel Gas Code is an important reference for this part of preparation.

Air Distribution Systems includes duct definitions, sizing and design, duct assembly and installation, hangers and supports, materials and shapes, insulation, fire and smoke control, hoods and exhaust systems, testing and balancing, ventilation requirements, plans, and symbols.

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems covers refrigeration theory, refrigerants, equipment sizing and design, equipment and components, piping, installation, system operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Heating Systems includes heating theory, system types, combustion air, vents and chimneys, equipment sizing, heating equipment, installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, hydronics, and hydronic piping.

The separate Mechanical Business and Law examination covers bidding and estimating, project management and supervision, contracts, financial topics, labor and personnel, risk management, payroll and payroll taxes, and licensing requirements. 

Open Book Test

The Oklahoma HVACR Journeyman Limited and HVACR Contractor Limited examinations are open-book tests. Candidates are responsible for bringing permitted references into the testing center. 

The current technical reference list includes the 2018 International Mechanical Code with Oklahoma revisions, the 2018 International Fuel Gas Code with Oklahoma revisions, Modern Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Mathematics for Plumbers and Pipefitters, OSHA 29 CFR Part 1926, and additional approved technical references. 

Approved reference materials may be highlighted, underlined, and indexed before the examination. Permanent tabs are permitted. Temporary removable tabs such as Post-it notes are not allowed. References may not contain written notes before or during the examination, and additional loose papers are not permitted with the approved materials. 

All included rental books in this Ultimate package are highlighted and tabbed. Candidates should still practice with the references throughout preparation so the tabs, indexes, chapters, tables, diagrams, and important technical sections become familiar before test day.

A silent, non-printing, non-programmable calculator is permitted under the current PSI examination rules.

Licensing Steps

1. Gain qualifying mechanical experience. Build verifiable HVAC/R experience within Oklahoma’s mechanical licensing structure.
2. Maintain proper apprentice registration when applicable. Oklahoma requires qualifying experience to be properly documented for licensing purposes unless the experience was lawfully obtained under an applicable exemption. 
3. Meet the applicable journeyman qualifications. Complete the experience or approved education-and-experience pathway required for Oklahoma HVAC/R journeyman eligibility.
4. Apply through the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board. Submit the Mechanical License Application and supporting documentation.
5. Receive examination authorization. Examination eligibility is determined by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board. 
6. Schedule with PSI. Once approved, arrange the applicable examination through PSI.
7. Prepare for the Journeyman Limited examination. Review electrical controls, natural gas, air distribution, refrigeration, heating, mathematics, and safety.
8. Complete the Journeyman Limited exam. The current examination contains 60 scored questions and requires 70%.
9. Gain additional contractor-level experience. Candidates advancing to contractor licensing must satisfy the additional requirements established for Mechanical Contractors.
10. Apply for HVAC/R Limited Contractor licensing. Submit the applicable contractor application and documentation.
11. Prepare for the Contractor Limited technical examination. Study all major HVAC/R categories with additional emphasis on refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical controls, heating, and air distribution.
12. Prepare for Mechanical Business and Law. Study contractor estimating, project management, contracts, financial management, personnel, risk management, payroll, licensing requirements, and the applicable Oklahoma business-law references.
13. Complete the required contractor examinations and licensing requirements. Follow the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board process for contractor license issuance and active status.

State Requirements

The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board regulates mechanical licensing in the state.

An HVAC/R Limited license authorizes qualifying work on cooling products, systems, and equipment, including process piping, with a cooling capacity of no more than 25 tons. The classification also covers heating equipment and process piping with a heat input of no more than 500,000 Btu/h per appliance, along with sheet metal, natural gas piping, and refrigeration. 

These capacity limits distinguish the HVAC/R Limited classification from HVAC/R Unlimited licensing. Professionals performing work outside the Limited scope must hold the appropriate license classification.

Oklahoma requires qualifying mechanical experience to be verifiable. One year of qualifying mechanical experience is defined as 2,000 hours, and properly documented apprentice experience is important when establishing licensing eligibility. 

Journeyman licensees perform authorized work within Oklahoma’s contractor and supervision structure. Contractor licensing carries additional responsibility for the mechanical firm and compliance with the state’s contractor requirements.

Test Information and Study Materials

A productive study plan should account for the differences between the Journeyman Limited and Contractor Limited examinations. The contractor exam contains more questions and places particularly strong emphasis on Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems, which accounts for 20 of the 80 scored questions. 

Prioritize Electrical Knowledge and Controls. Both examinations contain 15 questions in this category. Review motors, electrical theory, AC and DC circuits, controls, and their relationship to HVAC/R operation.

Strengthen Refrigeration and Air Conditioning knowledge. Study refrigeration theory, refrigerants, components, equipment sizing, piping, installation, troubleshooting, operation, and maintenance.
