Open Book Test

The Texas Journeyman Electrician examination is an open book test.

Licensing Steps

1. Gain qualifying electrical experience. Texas requires supervised on-the-job electrical training for the standard Journeyman Electrician pathway.
2. Work under a Texas-licensed Master Electrician. Qualifying experience must be completed under the required supervision.

State Requirements

A Texas Journeyman Electrician is licensed to perform electrical work under the general supervision of a Master Electrician.

The standard licensing pathway requires 8,000 hours of qualifying on-the-job training under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician. An applicant may submit at least 7,000 hours to become eligible to take the examination before completing the final 1,000 hours required for licensure.

Qualifying experience must be documented and signed by each supervising Master Electrician. TDLR may verify the experience submitted as part of the license application.
