Prepare for the Texas Master Electrician examination with a highlighted and tabbed 2026 National Electrical Code designed to make code navigation more efficient during study and exam preparation. Texas adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code as the state electrical code effective September 1, 2026, and current Texas electrician examinations use the 2026 NEC as the examination reference.
This package is built for experienced electricians working toward the Texas Master Electrician credential and for professionals whose long-term goal includes qualifying an electrical contracting business. Texas distinguishes between the individual Master Electrician license and the business-level Electrical Contractor license. An Electrical Contractor must employ a licensed Master Electrician who serves as the Master Electrician of Record, although the Master Electrician may also own the contracting business.
The included National Electrical Code, NEC, 2026 is highlighted and tabbed to support faster study and more organized navigation. Important sections can be easier to locate when reviewing services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding and bonding, motors, generators, wiring methods, conductor sizing, special occupancies, special equipment, renewable-energy systems, and electrical calculations.
The Texas Master Electrician examination is administered through PSI for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The examination is divided into two separately timed portions: an NEC Knowledge Portion and a Calculations Portion. Candidates must earn at least 70% on each portion.
Master-level electrical testing requires candidates to apply NEC requirements across a wide range of installations rather than relying on memorization alone. Candidates should understand how code articles interact, how exceptions affect general rules, and how tables, adjustment factors, demand factors, ampacity requirements, motor rules, grounding provisions, and special installation requirements apply to practical electrical problems.
Please allow up to 15 business days for tabbed and highlighted book package orders. The additional processing time allows the physical NEC book to be prepared before the order is completed.
The current Texas Master Electrician examination consists of two multiple-choice portions. Both portions must be passed independently.
NEC Knowledge Portion:
The NEC Knowledge Portion covers:
Calculations Portion:
The Calculations Portion covers calculations and theory, services and separately derived systems, feeders, branch circuits, wiring methods, electrical equipment, motors and generators, controls, special installations, and renewable-energy technologies.
Unless a question specifically states otherwise, conductors are treated as copper for examination purposes. Time remaining from one examination portion does not transfer to the other portion.
The Texas Master Electrician examination is an open book test. The current examination reference is the National Electrical Code, 2026 Edition.
Candidates are responsible for bringing their own NEC book to the examination center. Texas permits a soft-bound edition of the NEC. Loose-leaf, spiral-bound, and ring-bound NEC copies are not permitted, and the NEC Handbook is not an approved examination-room substitute for the codebook.
The NEC may be highlighted and underlined before the examination session and may contain notes prepared before testing. Current examination rules also permit permanent NEC index tabs manufactured or provided for use with the NEC book. Candidates may not add highlighting, underlining, notes, indexing, or other markings during the examination itself.
A highlighted and tabbed NEC can support study by making commonly referenced subjects easier to locate. Master Electrician candidates should become comfortable moving quickly among Articles 100, 110, 210, 215, 220, 230, 240, 250, 300, 310, 314, 430, and the NEC chapters covering special occupancies, special equipment, and special conditions.
Texas Master Electrician applicants must have held a Journeyman Electrician license for at least two years and must document at least 12,000 hours of on-the-job electrical training under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician.
The Texas Master Electrician credential authorizes electrical work involving the installation, maintenance, or extension of electrical wiring systems and associated apparatus and equipment within the scope established by state law.
The Master Electrician license should not be confused with the Texas Electrical Contractor license. The Master Electrician license is an individual credential. The Electrical Contractor license applies to the contracting business.
A Texas Electrical Contractor must employ a licensed Master Electrician as the company's Master Electrician of Record. The Master Electrician may also own the business. A Master Electrician is generally assigned to only one Electrical Contractor unless the Master Electrician owns more than 50% of the electrical contracting business.
Texas adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective September 1, 2026, with a limited state exception relating to certain GFCI requirements for outdoor outlets serving HVAC equipment.
The highlighted and tabbed preparation is designed to support more organized study and faster navigation of the NEC. Candidates can use the prepared reference while studying common Master Electrician topics and practicing timed code lookups.
Please allow up to 15 business days for tabbed and highlighted book package orders.
Services and Service Equipment: Services account for significant portions of both examination sections. Review service conductors, service equipment, disconnecting means, grounding, bonding, ratings, overcurrent protection, and service calculations.
Separately Derived Systems: Study transformers, system bonding jumpers, grounding electrode conductors, equipment grounding, and Article 250 requirements for separately derived systems.
Branch Circuits: Review Article 210 requirements, conductor sizing, required circuits, continuous loads, overcurrent protection, GFCI and AFCI protection, receptacles, and utilization loads.
Feeders: Study Article 215 along with feeder conductor sizing, load calculations, neutral requirements, grounding, and overcurrent protection.
Article 220 Calculations: Practice dwelling and commercial load calculations, lighting loads, receptacles, appliances, ranges, dryers, motors, heating and cooling equipment, and applicable demand factors.
Grounding and Bonding: Article 250 is essential Master Electrician material. Review grounding electrodes, bonding jumpers, equipment grounding conductors, services, feeders, separately derived systems, and conductor sizing.
Conductors: Study Article 310 ampacity tables, insulation ratings, temperature limitations, adjustment factors, correction factors, parallel conductors, and termination requirements.
Wiring Methods: Review Chapter 3 raceways, cables, boxes, conduit bodies, supports, underground wiring, wet locations, physical protection, raceway fill, and box fill.

Special Occupancies and Equipment: Review hazardous locations, health-care facilities, pools, signs, elevators, generators, electric vehicle systems, photovoltaic installations, energy storage, emergency systems, and other specialized NEC applications.
Renewable Energy Technologies: Current examination outlines include renewable-energy topics. Review photovoltaic systems, interconnected power sources, energy storage, and related code requirements.
Timed Navigation: Practice locating highlighted and tabbed NEC subjects under realistic time limits. The goal is to recognize the subject, move to the correct article, confirm the rule, and return to the question efficiently.
Calculation Practice: The separate Calculations Portion deserves dedicated preparation. Work through service, feeder, branch-circuit, conductor, motor, transformer, grounding, raceway, and equipment calculations without relying only on memorized shortcuts.
1 Exam Prep helps Texas Master Electrician candidates organize preparation around the two-part examination structure. A highlighted and tabbed NEC can make it easier to build familiarity with commonly tested articles while developing faster reference-navigation habits.
Trade-focused review supports services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding and bonding, wiring methods, conductor sizing, motors, generators, electrical equipment, special installations, renewable-energy technologies, and Master-level calculations.
