Utah changed the journeyman electrician written examination format beginning August 1, 2025. Journeyman candidates now take a combined written examination covering the code and theory material that was previously tested through separate examinations. Exam Details

The current Utah Journeyman Electrician Written Exam is administered through Prov for the Utah Division of Professional Licensing.

Beginning August 1, 2025, Utah replaced the separate journeyman code and theory examinations with a single combined written examination. The current examination contains 100 questions, allows 240 minutes for completion, and requires a minimum passing score of 75%.

Grounding and Bonding is the largest individual category with 10 questions, followed by Overcurrent Protection with 9 questions and Services, Feeders and Branch Circuits with 8 questions. Candidates should still prepare across the entire outline because the examination combines theory, calculations, code application, and state licensing material.

Journeyman applicants must also complete the Utah Electrician Practical Exam. The practical examination includes six tasks and allows 110 minutes. The practical portion evaluates hands-on electrical skills and is separate from the written examination.

Open Book Test

The Utah Journeyman Electrician Written Exam is an open book test. Candidates may use the references identified for the examination under Prov's reference-material rules.

Approved references may be prepared before testing with highlighting, underlining, and permanent tabs. Moveable or repositionable tabs and Post-it-style notes are not permitted. Handwritten notes are not allowed in the references unless specifically authorized by the licensing jurisdiction, and candidates may not mark in books during the exam.

The 2023 National Electrical Code is the central technical reference for the journeyman written examination. Candidates should become comfortable navigating the index, articles, chapters, tables, definitions, exceptions, informational notes, and cross-references.

Ugly's Electrical References supports preparation involving electrical formulas, calculations, conductor information, conversions, motors, voltage drop, and other practical electrical information. Candidates should understand the formulas rather than relying entirely on a last-minute lookup.

The Utah statutes and administrative rules support the State Laws & Rules portion of the written exam. Candidates should know which reference addresses licensing authority, electrician requirements, disciplinary and regulatory provisions, and construction-trade licensing requirements.

With 240 minutes for 100 questions, candidates average about 2.4 minutes per question. Efficient navigation matters. A strong strategy is to determine whether a question is primarily code, theory, calculation, or law before selecting the reference.

Licensing Steps

Utah electrician licensing is administered by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing. Journeyman Electrician candidates must satisfy the applicable education or experience requirements and complete the required examinations before licensure.

1. Work as a licensed Apprentice Electrician. Journeyman candidates build qualifying electrical experience through lawful apprentice work.
2. Complete an approved electrical training pathway. One Utah pathway combines a qualifying electrical apprenticeship education program with required on-the-job experience.
3. Meet the required experience level for examination eligibility. Candidates following the approved education pathway may become eligible for examination after completing the required education and at least 6,000 hours of qualifying electrical experience.
4. Prepare for the Utah Journeyman Electrician Written Exam. Study NEC requirements, electrical theory, calculations, and Utah laws and rules.
5. Practice open-book reference navigation. Become familiar with the NEC, electrical reference material, and Utah licensing laws before testing.
6. Register for the examination through Prov. Follow the current Utah electrical examination registration process.
7. Pass the Utah Journeyman Electrician Written Exam. The current written examination requires a score of at least 75%.
8. Pass the Utah Electrician Practical Exam. Journeyman candidates must successfully complete the required practical tasks.
9. Complete the full experience requirement for licensure. Exam eligibility and final licensing requirements are not necessarily identical.
10. Apply for the Journeyman Electrician license. Complete the Utah DOPL application process after satisfying all applicable requirements.

State Requirements

Utah provides more than one pathway toward Journeyman Electrician qualification. One standard pathway combines an approved program of electrical study with practical apprentice experience.

Under the education-and-experience pathway, the journeyman applicant completes an electrical training program totaling at least 576 classroom hours over no less than 48 months and accumulates the required electrical work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

For examination eligibility under this pathway, a candidate may qualify after completing the required electrical-study program and at least 6,000 hours of the required full-time electrical work experience. The full licensure pathway requires 8,000 hours of qualifying apprentice experience.

Utah also provides an experience-only pathway requiring 16,000 hours of qualifying full-time work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

The current Utah rule requires Journeyman Electrician applicants to pass the Utah Journeyman Electrician Written Exam with a score of at least 75% and the Utah Electrician Practical Exam.

Electricians are regulated under Utah's Construction Trades Licensing Act and the Electricians Licensing Act Rule. Candidates should understand that passing the examination does not by itself create a license; the applicant must also satisfy the applicable experience, education, application, and licensing requirements.

Test Information and Study Materials

A productive study plan should start with the 2023 NEC. Learn the overall code structure and build familiarity with frequently tested subjects instead of attempting to memorize the entire code.

Grounding and Bonding deserves substantial preparation because it is the largest individual exam category. Review grounding electrode systems, equipment grounding conductors, grounding electrode conductors, bonding, service bonding, separately derived systems, sizing requirements, and related Article 250 terminology.

Overcurrent Protection is another major area. Review fuse and circuit-breaker requirements, conductor protection, standard ampere ratings, equipment protection, and the relationship between conductor ampacity and overcurrent devices.

For Services, Feeders and Branch Circuits, candidates should understand the differences among these system components and know where the applicable NEC requirements are located. Study load calculations, conductor sizing, disconnecting means, required circuits, and feeder and service requirements.

Conductors and Cables preparation should include ampacity, conductor insulation, temperature limitations, adjustment and correction factors, conductor identification, and installation requirements.

Raceways and Enclosures requires familiarity with common raceway types, support requirements, raceway fill, conductor installation, boxes, enclosures, and fittings.

Motors and Controllers can involve both calculations and code navigation. Candidates should practice motor conductor sizing, overload protection, short-circuit and ground-fault protection, controllers, disconnects, and applicable NEC tables.

The exam also includes significant electrical theory. Current, resistance, voltage, power, and voltage drop together account for a large portion of the 100-question examination. Candidates should be comfortable using Ohm's law, power formulas, series and parallel circuit concepts, and voltage-drop calculations.

Do not overlook State Laws & Rules. Although the category contains only four questions, those questions require familiarity with material outside the NEC. Review the Utah Division of Professional Licensing Act, General Rule, Electricians Licensing Act Rule, and Construction Trades Licensing Act.

Practice under timed conditions. Begin by answering questions you know and use the references when code language, calculations, or state requirements need to be confirmed. Learning when to look something up is part of effective open-book preparation.

When a practice question is missed, determine whether the error came from electrical theory, calculation, NEC navigation, misunderstanding a definition, or selecting the wrong Utah law or rule. Addressing the specific reason for the error makes study time more productive.
