Utah updated its electrician examination structure beginning August 1, 2025. Residential Journeyman Electrician candidates now take a combined Utah Residential Electrician Examination rather than separate code and theory examinations. The current Utah Residential Electrician Examination is administered through Prov for the Utah Division of Professional Licensing.

Grounding and Bonding is the largest individual category with 9 questions. Overcurrent Protection and Services, Feeders and Branch Circuits each contain 8 questions. Conductors and Cables, Lighting and General Use Equipment, and Pools, Photovoltaic and Wind each contain 7 questions.

The examination also places significant emphasis on electrical theory and calculations. Current, power, resistance, voltage, and voltage drop together represent a substantial portion of the exam. Candidates should therefore combine NEC study with repeated electrical calculation practice.

Residential Journeyman Electrician applicants must also successfully complete the Utah Residential Electrician Practical Exam. The practical examination contains four tasks and allows 70 minutes. The current tasks include torque setting, residential evaporative cooler motor wiring using a schematic diagram, 4-way and 3-way light switch wiring, and schematic reading and wiring.

Open Book Test

Licensing Steps

Utah electrician licensing is administered by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing. Candidates pursuing the Residential Journeyman Electrician license must satisfy the applicable education, experience, written examination, practical examination, and application requirements.

  1. Register and work as a licensed Apprentice Electrician. Residential Journeyman candidates build qualifying electrical experience while working under the supervision requirements established by Utah law and rule.
  2. Select the applicable qualification pathway. Utah provides an apprenticeship-education pathway as well as an experience-only pathway for Residential Journeyman Electrician applicants.

  4. Accumulate qualifying residential electrical experience. Work experience must be obtained as a licensed Apprentice Electrician and meet Utah's residential electrical experience requirements.

State Requirements

Utah recognizes the Residential Journeyman Electrician as a distinct electrical license classification. The residential license applies to electrical work within the scope authorized by Utah's residential electrician statutes and administrative rules.

One qualification pathway requires completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship education program consisting of at least 288 classroom hours completed over no less than 24 months, together with at least 4,000 hours of full-time residential electrical work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

Utah also provides an experience-only pathway requiring at least 8,000 hours of full-time residential electrical work experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

For examination eligibility under the apprenticeship-education pathway, the current Prov Candidate Information Bulletin identifies completion of the two-year, minimum 288-hour electrical apprenticeship education program or competency-exam equivalence together with at least 3,000 hours of residential electrical experience as a licensed Apprentice Electrician.

Exam eligibility and final licensing requirements are not identical. Candidates using the education pathway still need to complete the full experience requirement applicable to Residential Journeyman Electrician licensure.

The current Utah administrative rule requires a Residential Journeyman Electrician applicant to pass the Utah Residential Journeyman Electrician Exam with a score of at least 75% and the Utah Residential Electrician Practical Exam.

Utah currently uses the 2023 National Electrical Code as the technical code reference for the residential written examination. Candidates should prepare using the current exam references and become familiar with residential applications of NEC requirements.
