Florida General Contractor License Requirements

Florida requires 4 years of verifiable construction experience and passing scores on both the Business and Finance exam and the General Contractor exam. You can apply online through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. The testing window opens once you submit your application forms and meet the experience requirement. Both exams are open book, multiple-choice questions covering Florida Building Code, ICC standards, and regulatory standards specific to state contractors.

Experience and Application Process

Your 4 years of experience must be documented with employer verification or tax records. Download application forms directly from the DBPR website. Processing takes 6 to 8 weeks after submission. Once approved, you schedule your contractor license exam through Pearson VUE testing centers statewide.

What the Exams Cover

The Business and Finance exam tests Florida construction lien law, workers' comp, contracts, and accounting. The General Contractor exam covers the Florida Building Code, NASCLA standards, and trade-specific construction methods. Both consist of 100 multiple-choice questions. You need a 70% to pass each test.
