The High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license covered here is administered by the New York City Department of Buildings.

The license authorizes qualified individuals to operate high-pressure boilers in New York City. These professionals are responsible for much more than watching a pressure gauge. Candidates with a recognized degree in mechanical engineering can qualify through a shorter experience pathway.

Current DOB requirements call for one year of experience operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers under the direct and continuing supervision of a NYC licensed High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer.

That one year must fall within the two years before the application date.

Other Experience Routes Are Available

You Have 24 Months to Pass the Practical

After passing the written examination, candidates apply separately for the practical exam.

NYC currently gives candidates up to 24 months from written-exam notification to pass the practical examination.

NYC DOB currently does not administer High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer practical examinations during July or August because of extreme heat conditions in the practical testing environment. The 24-month deadline still applies.

Schedule the practical with enough room for unexpected delays. Boiler operators already have enough pressure in their professional lives.

What Happens After You Pass Both Exams?

Passing the exams does not automatically issue the license. Candidates then complete the NYC DOB background investigation.

The current High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license term is three years.

NYC DOB currently lists a regular renewal fee of $45. A late renewal currently costs $95, which combines the $45 renewal charge with a $50 late fee.

Renewal documentation can include an updated physical examination plus boiler inspection certificates and employer affidavits when the licensee is responsible for operating high-pressure boilers.
