The Oklahoma HVACR Contractor Limited technical examination tests knowledge of the installation, maintenance, repair, fabrication, alteration, and extension of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating, and ventilation systems, including ductwork within a complete system subject to the Limited classification limits.

The current technical examination contains 80 scored questions with 210 minutes allowed. The passing requirement is 70%, equal to 56 correct answers.

Electrical Knowledge and Controls contains 15 questions. Topics include general electrical theory, motors, DC circuits, AC circuits, and controls. State Requirements

The Oklahoma Construction Industries Board regulates mechanical licensing, including the HVAC/R Limited Contractor classification.

An HVAC/R Limited Contractor may perform qualifying installation, alteration, modification, service, maintenance, and repair of cooling products, systems, and equipment, including process piping, with a cooling capacity of no more than 25 tons.

The classification also covers heating equipment and associated process piping with a heat input of no more than 500,000 Btu/h per appliance. Sheet metal, natural gas piping, and refrigeration are also included within the authorized Limited scope.

These limits distinguish HVAC/R Limited licensing from the HVAC/R Unlimited classification. Work beyond the Limited capacity thresholds requires the appropriate Unlimited licensing.

Oklahoma Mechanical Contractor applicants must meet the applicable journeyman-level qualifications and the additional contractor experience requirement established by the state.

A Mechanical Contractor must be a permanent employee, owner, partner, or officer of the mechanical firm for which the individual serves as licensed contractor.

After successfully completing the required examinations, a contractor license remains inactive until applicable bond and insurance requirements are completed. An active Oklahoma Mechanical Contractor must maintain a $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board.
