This Is a New York City Master Plumber License

The license discussed here is issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. It authorizes licensed plumbing work in New York City under the City's Construction Codes, rules, and related requirements.

It should not be confused with a single statewide New York Master Plumber credential. Plumbing licensing outside New York City can be handled differently depending on the local jurisdiction.

What Does a NYC Master Plumber Do?

New York City Master Plumbers are licensed to perform plumbing work within the scope established by NYC law and Department of Buildings rules.

The work can involve:

• Water supply and distribution systems
• Sanitary drainage
• Storm drainage
• Venting systems
• Plumbing fixtures
• Traps and interceptors
• Fuel-gas piping
• Plumbing equipment
• Water heaters
• Special piping systems
• Plumbing permits and inspections
• Certain sprinkler and standpipe work within the permitted plumbing scope

Master Plumbers also have professional and business responsibilities. Knowing how to install a system is only one side of the license.

Basic Qualification Requirements

Current NYC applicants must meet several general qualifications before submitting the background application.

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be able to read and write English
• Be fit to perform the work authorized by the license
• Meet the Department's character requirements
• Meet one approved plumbing-experience pathway
• Pass the written examination
• Pass the practical examination
• Complete the background investigation
• Complete the final DOB NOW: Licensing process

Passing the test is important, but the score alone does not magically turn into a license while the paperwork cheers from the sidelines.

The Standard Experience Route Requires Seven Years

One of the main qualification routes requires at least seven years of total qualifying experience within the 10 years before application.

That experience must involve the planning or design and installation of plumbing systems under the direct and continuing supervision of a licensed Master Plumber in the United States.

This makes Journeyman Plumber registration an important part of the normal career path toward becoming a NYC Master Plumber.

Engineering Education Can Create Another Path

Applicants with a qualifying bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or appropriate engineering technology may use another experience route.

That path currently requires at least five years of qualifying experience within the seven years before the background application.

The work still needs to involve planning or design and installation of plumbing systems under the appropriate licensed supervision, and at least two years of the experience must be in New York City.

Professional Engineers and Architects Have Another Route

A New York State-licensed Professional Engineer or Registered Architect may qualify with at least three years of plumbing-system experience within the previous five years.

The experience must include planning or design and installation of plumbing systems, with at least one year of qualifying experience in New York City.

NYC also recognizes certain City-agency plumbing work and qualifying plumbing inspection experience under separate rules.

Inspection Experience Can Receive Partial Credit

Certain plumbing inspection work for a government agency, private inspection agency, or another entity accepted by the Buildings Commissioner may count toward the experience requirement.

Qualifying inspection experience is credited at 50 percent of the time worked and cannot provide more than two and one-half years of credit.

The remaining experience has to come from qualifying plumbing planning, design, and installation work under a licensed Master Plumber.

What Is on the Master Plumber Written Exam?

Gas Piping is the largest section with 29 questions. Equipment follows with 23, Drainage with 21, Water Supply with 17, and Fire Protection with 10.

The blueprint gives you a pretty clear message: fuel gas is not an optional side chapter for a NYC Master Plumber candidate.

Gas Piping Is the Largest Exam Section

The current Gas Piping section contains questions on installation, maintenance, inspection, permits, materials, sizing, appliances, drips, flow controls, piping supports, and shutoff valves.

Study:

• Approved gas piping materials
• Gas-system installation
• Pipe sizing
• Shutoff valves
• Piping supports
• Inspection requirements
• Permits
• Gas appliances
• Flow controls
• Maintenance requirements

Practice the system as a whole. Follow the fuel gas from supply through distribution piping, controls, shutoffs, and the final appliance connection.

Equipment Is Worth 23 Questions

The Equipment section combines code administration with real plumbing components and system requirements.

The current blueprint includes:

• Equipment installation
• Maintenance
• Inspection requirements
• Permits
• Materials
• Limited alterations
• Code applicability
• Fixtures, faucets, and fittings
• Water-system sizing
• Special piping and storage systems
• Traps

Do not treat equipment questions as simple product-identification questions. Installation, permits, materials, and sizing rules matter too.

Drainage Accounts for 21 Questions

Drainage is a core plumbing subject and one of the largest sections of the written exam.

• Indirect waste

Sanitary drainage and vents each contribute four questions, so candidates should understand both how waste moves through the system and how the vent system protects proper drainage operation and trap seals.

Water Supply Is Worth 17 Questions

Water Supply questions cover installation, maintenance, inspection, permits, water recycling, and water distribution.

• Distribution piping
• Pipe sizing
• Valves
• Pressure considerations

Water distribution is the largest subtopic in this category. Study how pipe size, demand, pressure, fixtures, and code requirements work together.

Fire Protection Adds 10 Questions

Master Plumber candidates are also tested on the portions of fire protection work that interact with plumbing responsibilities.

The blueprint includes:

• Standpipe and sprinkler installation
• Standpipe and sprinkler maintenance
• Fire-protection inspection requirements
• Permits

Keep the license boundaries in mind. Master Plumbing and Master Fire Suppression Piping are separate NYC license categories, even though certain systems and code requirements overlap.

The Written Exam Is Closed Book

The current Master Plumber written examination does not allow reference materials in the testing room.

Use them heavily while learning, then gradually remove them from your practice sessions.

1. Study one plumbing topic in the code.
2. Close the book.
3. Explain the requirement in plain language.
4. Draw the system when useful.
5. Answer several questions without references.
6. Check your answers afterward.
7. Repeat weak subjects later.

Which Books Should You Study?

The current official examination bulletin identifies four primary New York City code references for Master Plumber preparation.

Candidates can review the New York Master Plumber Exam Book Package for these four major NYC study references.

The Plumbing Code should receive a large share of your time, but do not ignore the Fuel Gas Code. Gas Piping is currently the single largest section on the written examination.

The Practical Exam Tests Real Trade Skill

Passing the written exam gets you to the next stage. It does not finish the testing process.

The current practical exam requires candidates to produce two work specimens:

Candidates currently receive four hours total for the practical examination.

How Is the Practical Exam Scored?

The practical exam is evaluated on actual workmanship and functionality, not a multiple-choice percentage.

Current scoring criteria include:

• Soundness of the assembly
• Pressure testing for leaks
• Compliance with diagram specifications
• Measurement accuracy
• Levelness and flatness
• Alignment
• Quality of soldering
• Overall workmanship

Candidates must pass all required criteria for each exercise to receive an overall passing result.

This is why practical preparation should involve actual pipe, fittings, measurement, cutting, assembly, threading, soldering, alignment, and pressure testing. Watching somebody else do it beautifully on a screen is educational, but the test still hands the tools to you.

Plan the Practical Exam Deadline Carefully

After passing the written examination, candidates apply separately for the practical.

Current NYC DOB guidance says candidates have up to 24 months from written-exam notification to pass the practical examination.

DOB's current Master Plumber licensing presentation also tells first-time test takers to apply for the practical within 60 days of passing the written examination.

Current Exam and License Fees

The Master Plumber License Has a Three-Year Term

NYC currently issues the Master Plumber license on a three-year cycle.

The current regular license renewal fee is $150. The initial seal is $50, while regular seal renewal is currently $75.

Late renewal can also trigger additional fees, so license expiration is another date worth putting somewhere more reliable than the back of an old supply-house receipt.

What Happens After You Pass Both Exams?

Passing both examinations starts the background and final licensing phase.

Applicants currently have one year from practical-exam notification to submit the background application through DOB NOW: Licensing.

Current documentation can include:

• Passing examination documentation
• LIC62 physical examination form
• Experience Verification Forms from qualifying supervisors
• Detailed Social Security earnings history
• Government-issued photo identification
• Social Security documentation
• Recent pay stub or W-2 documentation
• Business documents
• Insurance documentation

Experience Verification Forms must be completed by the qualifying supervisors. DOB specifically states that forms completed by Human Resources or by the applicant are not accepted.

Applications Now Use DOB NOW: Licensing

As of February 23, 2026, new Master Plumber license applications are submitted through DOB NOW: Licensing.

NYC DOB no longer accepts walk-in or paper applications for this new license process.

That makes document preparation especially important. Check signatures, notarization dates, supervisor information, earnings records, business documents, and insurance before submitting the application.

A Master Plumber Also Needs the Business Side in Order

A licensee applicant operating a plumbing company has to satisfy NYC business requirements in addition to passing the trade exams.

Current requirements can include:

• Being an officer, partner, or sole proprietor of the company
• Maintaining an approved place of business in New York City
• General liability insurance
• Workers' compensation insurance
• Disability insurance
• Proper corporation, LLC, partnership, or sole-proprietor records
• Business-location documentation

NYC also has ownership and control rules that can apply to plumbing businesses, so the company structure should be reviewed before the final license application.

Build Your Study Plan Around the 100 Questions

1. Start with Gas Piping. It is the largest section with 29 questions.
2. Study Equipment next. Equipment contributes 23 questions.
3. Spend serious time on Drainage and Venting. Drainage contributes 21 questions.
4. Review Water Supply and Distribution. This section contributes 17 questions.
5. Study Fire Protection. Ten questions can easily separate a passing score from another exam fee.
6. Practice closed book. Gradually remove the codes from your practice sessions.
7. Train separately for the practical. Black steel and copper assembly need hands-on repetition.
8. Complete full four-hour practice sessions. Train your concentration and pacing before exam day.

Prepare for the License, Not Just the Written Test

A strong NYC Master Plumber candidate needs code knowledge and real trade skill. Study sanitary drainage, vents, storm drainage, water distribution, fixtures, traps, gas piping, equipment, inspections, permits, maintenance, sizing, and the plumbing portions of fire-protection work.

Then work without the books. The current written exam is closed book, so your final preparation should test recall, system understanding, and problem solving instead of page-finding speed.

At the same time, practice the hands-on work needed for the practical exam. Measure carefully. Cut cleanly. Thread correctly. Sweat copper properly. Build to the supplied diagram. Check alignment. Pressure-test your work. Develop habits that make good workmanship repeatable instead of lucky.

Finally, organize the licensing paperwork before the exam process is over. Seven years of qualifying plumbing experience can be difficult enough to document when everything is fresh. Rebuilding that history from memory years later is a plumbing project nobody ordered.
