2023 Texas Master Electrician Exam Prep Study Package Includes Instructor-Led NEC Course (Based on the 2023 NEC)

Prepare for the Texas Master Electrician examination with a comprehensive study package built around the 2023 National Electrical Code. This Texas Master Electrician Exam Prep Study Package combines the NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, 2023 Edition, NEC tabs, master electrician flash cards, a Master Electrician Study Guide, a Calculations Study Guide, an online instructor-led NEC course, simulated practice exams, an NEC overview, and live and recorded instructional videos.

Texas has a statewide Master Electrician license administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. A Texas Master Electrician is licensed to install, maintain, or extend electrical wiring systems and the apparatus and equipment associated with the use of electrical energy in, on, outside, or attached to buildings, residences, structures, properties, and premises, including service entrance conductors.

Preparing for the Texas Master Electrician examination requires advanced knowledge of the National Electrical Code, electrical theory, plan reading, services, feeders, branch circuits, grounding and bonding, wiring methods, equipment, motors, generators, control devices, special occupancies, renewable energy technologies, and electrical calculations.

The examination is divided into separate NEC Knowledge and Calculations portions. Candidates must demonstrate both efficient code-navigation skills and the ability to solve mathematical problems accurately. The Texas Master Electrician examination is administered by PSI for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Applicants must first submit their Master Electrician license application to TDLR and receive approval before scheduling the examination.

The current Texas Master Electrician examination consists of two separate multiple-choice portions: the NEC Knowledge Portion and the Calculations Portion. Candidates must earn at least 70 percent on each portion.

The NEC Knowledge Portion contains 75 items, including five non-scored questions, and allows 150 minutes for completion. The Calculations Portion contains 33 items, including three non-scored questions, and allows 170 minutes.

The NEC Knowledge Portion covers definitions, electrical theory, plan reading, electrical services, service equipment, separately derived systems, feeders, branch circuits, grounding and bonding, electrical wiring methods and materials, equipment and devices, motors, generators, control devices, disconnecting means, special occupancies, special equipment, special conditions, photovoltaic systems, and electric vehicle chargers.

Services and service equipment are a major examination area. Candidates should understand load requirements, fault-current concepts, service equipment, temporary wiring, transformers, grounding, bonding, and separately derived systems.

Branch-circuit preparation should include conductor requirements, GFCI and AFCI protection, overcurrent protection, grounding and bonding conductors, conductor ampacity, and applicable installation requirements.

Wiring methods and materials include raceways, cable trays, boxes, enclosures, cabinets, panels, cables, cords, and underground wiring. Candidates should understand permitted applications, installation limitations, support requirements, fill calculations, and physical protection.

Equipment and device questions can involve receptacles, switches, luminaires, air-conditioning equipment, refrigeration equipment, heating equipment, appliances, and workspace clearance. Motors and generators represent another important technical area requiring both code knowledge and calculation skills.

The Calculations Portion focuses on electrical theory and mathematical applications involving services, separately derived systems, feeders, branch circuits, conductors, grounding and bonding, raceways, equipment, motors, generators, controls, special installations, and renewable-energy technologies.

Simulated practice exams included with this package help students work through technical questions in an exam-oriented format. Reviewing missed questions helps identify whether additional study is needed in calculations, code navigation, theory, services, branch circuits, motors, or other subjects.

Open Book Test

The Texas Master Electrician examination is an open-book test. Candidates may bring the approved National Electrical Code book into the examination room under the rules established by TDLR and PSI.

Through August 31, 2026, Texas electrician examinations are referenced to the 2023 National Electrical Code. Beginning September 1, 2026, the examinations will be referenced to the 2026 NEC. Candidates should use the code edition corresponding to their actual examination date.

For examinations currently based on the 2023 NEC, candidates are responsible for bringing their own acceptable copy of the National Electrical Code. Soft-bound editions are permitted. Loose-leaf, spiral-bound, and ring-bound copies are not permitted.

The NEC may be highlighted, underlined, and contain notes prepared before entering the examination session. Candidates may not write, highlight, underline, index, or otherwise mark the NEC during the examination.

Permanent index tabs manufactured or provided for the NEC book are permitted. Homemade, do-it-yourself, or non-NEC tabs are not permitted under the current examination rules. Candidates using the included tabs should prepare their exam-room code book only in a manner that complies with the current PSI bulletin.

Additional paper, whether loose, taped, adhered, or stapled to the book, is prohibited. The NEC Handbook is also not permitted in the examination room.

An open-book examination still requires strong preparation. Candidates do not have unlimited time to search for every rule. The NEC Knowledge Portion allows 150 minutes for 75 items, while the Calculations Portion allows 170 minutes for 33 items.

Students should practice recognizing the subject of each question first and then moving directly to the applicable article, table, definition, or exception. Regular code-book navigation during the course and simulated exams can make reference research faster and more consistent.

Licensing Steps

Begin by meeting the experience qualifications established by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. To apply for a Texas Master Electrician license through the standard experience-and-examination pathway, an applicant must have held a Texas Journeyman Electrician license for at least two years.

The applicant must also document at least 12,000 hours of on-the-job electrical training performed under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician. Journeyman Industrial Electrician experience does not qualify toward the Master Electrician license under the standard pathway.

Obtain experience verification from the Master Electricians who supervised the qualifying work. TDLR requires the applicable experience documentation as part of the Master Electrician application process.

Submit the Master Electrician license application to TDLR. After the application and supporting documentation have been reviewed and approved, TDLR provides authorization to take the licensing examination.

Schedule the examination through PSI after receiving eligibility. Applicants have one year from the date TDLR receives the application to satisfy the licensing requirements, including passing the examination.

Create a preparation schedule that addresses both examination portions. Begin with the NEC overview and organize the 2023 NEC for efficient study navigation. Work through the Master Electrician Study Guide by examination subject and use the Calculations Study Guide for focused mathematical practice.

Use flash cards regularly to reinforce formulas, definitions, terminology, and electrical concepts. Participate in live instructor-led sessions and use recorded videos to revisit challenging material.

Complete simulated practice exams under realistic time limits. Practice the NEC Knowledge Portion separately from calculation-intensive testing so you can develop appropriate pacing for each part.

After passing both examination portions, complete the remaining TDLR licensing requirements. Once the Master Electrician license is issued, maintain the credential through annual renewal and continuing education.

State Requirements

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation administers statewide electrician licensing. Except for specific exemptions established by law, individuals performing electrical work in Texas must hold the appropriate electrical license.

A Texas Master Electrician license authorizes advanced electrical work involving electrical wiring systems and associated apparatus and equipment. Master Electricians may also play an important role in electrical contracting businesses.

To qualify through the standard experience pathway, an applicant must have held a Texas Journeyman Electrician license for at least two years and document 12,000 hours of on-the-job electrical training under the supervision of a Texas-licensed Master Electrician.

Texas also requires an Electrical Contractor business to either be owned by a properly licensed Master Electrician who assigns the license to the company or employ a licensed Master Electrician who serves as the Master Electrician of Record.

Texas adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code as the minimum electrical standard for covered electrical work beginning September 1, 2023. Municipalities may establish local amendments within the authority provided by Texas law.

Texas Master Electrician licenses are valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Master Electricians must complete four hours of approved continuing education during each license cycle before renewal.

The state’s examination code edition is scheduled to change from the 2023 NEC to the 2026 NEC on September 1, 2026. Candidates should distinguish between the code edition used in this 2023 study package and the edition that applies to the examination date they select.

Licensed electricians and electrical contractors must also comply with applicable permitting, inspection, local amendment, supervision, and electrical contractor requirements. Holding the Master Electrician license does not eliminate project-specific permit or inspection obligations.
