Michigan maintains statewide electrical licensing through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Construction Codes. The state issues Electrical Journeyman licenses to applicants who satisfy the applicable age, apprenticeship, experience, and examination requirements. One important exception is the City of Detroit, which issues its own electrical licenses and registrations locally.

Michigan's current electrical licensing examinations are based on the 2023 National Electrical Code, the 2023 Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8, the Skilled Trades Regulation Act, the Stille-DeRossett-Hale Single State Construction Code Act, and associated rules. Michigan is actively working through the rulemaking process for adoption of the 2026 NEC, but as of August 10, 2026, the state's current electrical licensing examination remains based on the 2023 NEC.

This study package is intentionally based on the 2026 NEC. It gives electricians an opportunity to study the newer National Electrical Code cycle while developing the navigation, calculations, electrical theory, and trade knowledge needed at the journeyman level. Candidates preparing specifically for the current Michigan licensing examination should also study the 2023 NEC and Michigan-specific electrical rules used to develop the actual examination questions.

Exam Details

The Michigan Electrical Journeyman examination is administered by PSI Services for the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Construction Codes. Applicants must first receive approval from the state before scheduling the licensing examination with PSI.

The current Michigan Electrical Journeyman examination contains 80 questions. Candidates receive 150 minutes, or 2 hours and 30 minutes, to complete the examination. The required passing score is 75%.

The examination evaluates knowledge of the Skilled Trades Regulation Act, rules adopted under that act, the current Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8, the Stille-DeRossett-Hale Single State Construction Code Act, codes adopted under the applicable state construction code provisions, and electrical theory relating to those requirements.

Electrical installation subjects identified for the current examination include grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, wiring methods and installations, boxes and cabinets, services, feeders, motors and motor controls, special occupancies, load calculations, lighting, appliances, box and raceway fill, power-limited circuits, general electrical trade knowledge, and electrical theory.

Michigan currently states that all electrical examinations are based on the 2023 National Electrical Code and 2023 Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8. Other NEC editions may be used during the examination under the current testing rules, but examination questions are developed from the 2023 NEC.

Michigan has proposed updating its electrical code rules to incorporate the 2026 NEC, but that rulemaking process is still underway as of August 10, 2026. Candidates taking the examination under the currently published requirements should prepare for the 2023-based examination.

Open Book Test

The Michigan Electrical Journeyman examination is an open-book test. Candidates are responsible for bringing the authorized reference materials they intend to use during the examination.

The National Electrical Code is permitted in the examination room. Although other NEC editions may currently be used, the examination questions are based on the 2023 NEC. Candidates preparing specifically for the licensing examination should therefore develop strong familiarity with the 2023 edition and Michigan's current Part 8 electrical rules.

Michigan's current PSI rules place important restrictions on how the NEC may be prepared. The NEC may contain factory markings or highlighting and factory tabs only. The NEC Handbook is not allowed in the examination room.

The NEC tabs included with this 2026 study package are intended for study and code-navigation practice. Candidates should not assume that aftermarket study tabs may be taken into the Michigan examination because the current testing bulletin limits the NEC to factory tabs.

The Michigan statutes and rules permitted as examination references must be bound. Materials printed from the Bureau of Construction Codes must be bound as separate documents according to the current testing requirements. Highlighting, marking, and tabs are not permitted in those printed documents.

Open-book testing still requires efficient preparation. With 80 questions and 150 minutes, candidates have less than two minutes on average for each question. Spending several minutes searching randomly for a single code requirement can make it difficult to complete the examination.

Use the included NEC overview, tabs, study guides, and simulated practice exams to develop a repeatable navigation method. Identify the electrical subject first, determine where that subject is located in the code, find the applicable requirement, and then apply it to the question.

Licensing Steps

  1. Register and work as an electrical apprentice. Michigan electrical apprentices must satisfy the state's registration and related technical instruction requirements while gaining supervised experience.
  2. Complete qualifying electrical experience. Journeyman applicants must complete at least 8,000 hours and four years as an electrical apprentice in qualifying electrical construction, maintenance, wiring, or equipment work.
  3. Work under qualifying supervision. The experience used for Michigan Journeyman Electrician licensing must be performed under supervision recognized by the state, including supervision by a Michigan-licensed Electrical Journeyman or Master Electrician.
  4. Maintain required apprenticeship training. Electrical apprentices must participate in an approved related technical instruction program and continue the required coursework during apprenticeship.
  5. Apply for Journeyman examination eligibility. Submit the required application and experience documentation to the Michigan Bureau of Construction Codes.
  6. Receive state approval to test. Only the State of Michigan determines eligibility for the licensing examination. After approval, candidates receive instructions for scheduling with PSI.
  7. Prepare for the examination. Review the NEC, Michigan Electrical Code Rules Part 8, state laws, electrical theory, wiring methods, services, feeders, grounding and bonding, motors, calculations, boxes, raceways, and special installations.
  8. Schedule and take the PSI examination. Approved applicants register and schedule the Electrical Journeyman examination through PSI.
  9. Earn the required passing score. Candidates must score at least 75% on the Electrical Journeyman examination.
  10. Complete the licensing process. After satisfying the applicable experience and examination requirements, complete the remaining state requirements for issuance of the Michigan Electrical Journeyman license.

State Requirements

Michigan requires an Electrical Journeyman applicant to be at least 20 years old.

An applicant must also have completed 8,000 hours and four years as an electrical apprentice. The qualifying work must involve electrical construction or maintenance of buildings, electrical wiring, or electrical equipment and must be performed under qualifying supervision.

Michigan requires electrical apprentices to participate in an approved apprenticeship training program that includes related technical instruction. Apprentices must maintain their registration and continue required coursework while accumulating qualifying work experience.

Michigan may provide experience credit for certain recognized training or educational programs. Applicants relying on education or training toward qualification must follow the state's applicable documentation and approval requirements.

After completing the qualifying requirements, an applicant must pass the Electrical Journeyman examination with a minimum score of 75%.

Michigan does not currently maintain electrical license reciprocity with another state or country. Out-of-state applicants seeking consideration for Michigan licensure must provide documentation of the license they hold and the licensing requirements of the jurisdiction that issued it so Michigan can evaluate the applicant's qualifications.

The City of Detroit is an important exception within the state system. Detroit issues its own electrical licenses and registrations locally, so candidates working within Detroit should follow the city's applicable licensing requirements.

Exam preparation is separate from licensing eligibility. This package provides NEC instruction, electrical calculations practice, trade-focused review, simulated testing, and study organization. It does not replace the apprenticeship, supervised experience, application, examination, or license requirements established by Michigan.

Test Information and Study Materials

A strong Michigan Journeyman Electrician study plan should combine NEC navigation, Michigan-specific regulatory material, electrical calculations, electrical theory, and practical installation knowledge.

Start with grounding and bonding. Develop familiarity with grounding electrode systems, equipment grounding conductors, bonding requirements, and the NEC organization of these subjects. Practice identifying the type of grounding or bonding issue before beginning a code search.

Review overcurrent protection. Study the relationships between conductor requirements, overcurrent devices, equipment protection, branch circuits, feeders, motors, and other installations.

Study wiring methods and installations. Practice working with raceways, cables, conductors, boxes, cabinets, and associated requirements. Code navigation is especially important because wiring methods are distributed across multiple NEC articles.

Review services and feeders. Learn to distinguish service requirements from feeder requirements and practice applicable load, conductor, grounding, bonding, and protection calculations.

Practice motors and motor controls. Motor questions can combine electrical theory, code rules, conductor sizing, overload protection, short-circuit protection, and calculations. Use the Calculations Study Guide alongside your NEC study.

Work on load calculations. Electrical calculations are an important part of Michigan's examination content. Practice problems repeatedly and focus on understanding the process instead of memorizing individual answers.

Review boxes and raceway fill. These subjects involve both calculations and code-table navigation. Practice finding the applicable requirements and completing the calculations accurately.

Include lighting, appliances, power-limited circuits, and special occupancies. A complete preparation routine should address the full range of topics identified for the Michigan examination.

Study electrical theory. Understanding electrical principles helps with calculations, troubleshooting, and interpreting practical electrical questions. Use flash cards and the Master Study Guide to reinforce terminology and concepts.

Review Michigan-specific rules and laws. The Michigan examination is not based on the NEC alone. Candidates should also become familiar with Part 8, the Skilled Trades Regulation Act, and the applicable construction code law covered by the exam.

Use the NEC overview. The included course overview helps you understand how the National Electrical Code is organized before working through individual code questions.

Use the included tabs for study. Tabs help organize your personal 2026 NEC and support repeated navigation exercises. Remember that Michigan's current exam rules allow factory tabs only in the NEC used during the actual examination.

Use live and recorded instructor-led training. Guided instruction provides another way to understand code topics and calculation methods. Recorded lessons can be revisited when simulated testing identifies a subject that needs additional attention.

Complete simulated practice exams regularly. Use each practice exam to identify weaker subjects. Review why questions were missed and return to the relevant NEC material, calculations guide, Master Study Guide, flash cards, or instructional videos for targeted preparation.
